You need to change the axles out every 15K with GL-5 synthetic 75/90, 75/110 or 75/140 its your choice. The trans service is every 30K with a new filter and ATF+4 fluid.

You guys are buying the fancy stuff. I run 80w90. It's about $50 for a 5 gallon bucket from Napa. So ~$2.25 a quart.

Figure rear diff is about 5 quarts and front about 3.

I do diffs, trans and T Case every 15k.

Nothing fancy; just using what's specified as correct for the AAM axles. The 3rd GEN AAM's require a GL5 Full Synthetic 75W90 Differential Fluid, unlike the non-synthetic required in the 2nd GEN DANA axles.

$450 from a dealer is a great price!!!

My first change dealer charged me $970!!!
That included adjusting the bands on the transmission... you can find the instructions on-line in about 5 min (Genos Garage) and perform this yourself in about 10 min... just have a good torque wrench when you do...

I learned real quick the dealer is out for one thing... since then I have done it myself...

Fluids alone are around $250, with synthetic dif. and eng. oil.... all in all fluid and filters it costs me about $300 to do this myself!!!

I would show you receipts, but I don't have 'em handy right now... but I am about to do my change again in a few thousand more miles!!!

gsbrockman hit the nail on the head. If you are going to say you can do it for $25, everyone would imagine you are compling with the requirement for the 3rd Gen truck which is also what the dealer is putting in, a 75W90 GL-5 synthetic.

That's rediculous. That stuff is like 15 bucks a quart.

I'm guessing the T-case is due every 30K too?

Ok, I didn't notice that it was for a 3rd gen.

OK... synthetic gear oil is like $5/quart. So instead of $25 with dyno oil, $40.

Sythetic engine oil is 2x the price of dyno oil $18 vs $9.

Ok so for a 3rd gen you are looking at ~$150 for everything.

I'm cheap I guess. An hr or 2 of my time to get out at relax working on the truck VERY much worth $300. Just the fact that I know it's done right is worth that. I trust NO ONE working on my truck other than my very close friends... which are not many.

What I meant was he got it up the gazoo on the power steering and brake sytem flush. What truck with 18,00 miles needs the friggin' power steering sytem "flushed" and a brake system "flush". Why would a truck need a power steering "flush" unless your changing the master cylinder anyway???? And no need to "flush" the brake sytem unless it has air in it or changing pads.

Sounds like an extra $200.00 for the dealer to make off him for something that was absolutley NOT needed.

tx270,

How did you know his mileage? I think I missed something. You are referring to the guy with the $650 bill, not the orginal post creator that only paid $450, right?

Where are you getting synthetic gear oil for this price? We are a Pennzoil dealer and we pay $13 per quart for full synthetic 75-90. We retail it for about $17

I flush my brake system everyy two years and power steering. The 1500 in my sig has had it down several times. My 03 I'll admit once.Use to do it yearly way back when.Handled imports for 15 years and it was in the maintance book by the manufacture. On Porche as well as flushing the brake system we cleaned and lubed caliper slides on a yearly maintance.Kept things lasting and working great caught problems early on.

Just for some info, here is a breakdown of what our shop charges for services typical for our trucks. Keep in mind that we are a full service shop and we normally cut prices on the lube side to bring work/customers into the hoist bays. To be more clear, we look for work while servicing cars and trucks.

Diff service: 39.95 dino, 69.95 synthetic. This includes removing the cover. Posi additive is 14.95

Trans flush: $119.95 for regular dexron 2/3 fluid, $149.95 for 'multi vehicle' fluid. This includes trans filter, and pan drop, reseal.

Fuel filters for diesel apps usually run 40-50 dollars. The filters cost us 16-30 dollars. Diesel filters are more labor than gas.

Engine oil changes start at 59.95 for diesel apps, including filter and up to 7 quarts. Each additional quart is 2.99

Synthetic engine oil changes are $120-140 for a cummins.

Our shop makes very little off these services. Barely enough to keep the lights on. Where we make the money is when we find loose ball joints and tie rod ends, worn brakes, oddly worn tires, tire leaks, oil leaks, check engine lights, exhaust work, etc etc. When looking for this work, we are not only trying to bring money into the shop, but we are also alerting the average joe to things that he might not have noticed on his own. In fact a great deal of our customers are themselves mechanics at other shops who just would rather have us do their service.

A diesel fuel filter is more labor than a gas? Granted, I'm only speaking of the Cummins but it takes about 5 min total, MUCH faster than any gas engine I own.
You need to buy your fuel filters somewhere else, anyone on this site can get fuel filters cheaper than that even buying one at a time.

Not trying to knock you, just some observations
