First post!

Hey,

My first post! Anyway, I have seen all kinds of fuel mileage numbers searching the site but I was wondering when they start getting better. I purchased a '06 Mega cab SLT TCD a few months back. I have put on 2500 miles and we just took it out for a drive. After 100 miles of easy hiway driving at 60mph it registered 17.5 on the overhead. It's a 4x4 with 373 gears. My question is will it get better and when? I am still running #1 grade fuel.

i have 4800 on mine and am getting about 16 if i drive it easy. the over head on most of these trucks are kinda off, so i would hand calculate it if i were you. from what iv seen mine has slowly been getting better, its up from about 14.5 when i first got it.

iv herd it can take up to 20K miles to get really good, unless you tow a lot or haul heavy.

welcome to the site.

What kind of fuel mileage is considered "really good"? From what I have read here, Aftermarket cold air intakes and a better flowing exhaust can help along with proper maintanance and tire pressures. Anymore tips?

My overhead is about 1 MPG better then a hand calc. If you want real numbers you will have to do your own math. I have about 25K on my truck and find that without a load 14 to 15 is normal in mixed traffic and about 18 to 19 is possible at a steady 60 mph. I was talking with a friend this week who has a 03 and he mentioned that his mileage seemed sub par until he hit 45000 miles and then like magic his mileage improved by 4 miles a gallon. His truck has no mods.

You've pretty much got it for 'cheap' stuff. I did a DIY CAI and added a drop in after market air filter... whole deal was about $60. Works great until you hit around 500 hp. I have my tires +5 in the rear, and +10 in the front, ( of factory specs) and it has done me good. I think with all the mods that you listed above, I saw almost a +3-4 mpg increase. Add an Edge Juice with attitude, and I'm getting 17.5 around town, driving like I want.

Welcome to the DTR. It's a great place, you'll love it here!!!

Your right. I think I'll like this place.
Madhat, I have no idea what the heck is in your truck in your signature. I have some learning to do!

I think I know what MIA is.
DIY Custom airbox?
Turbo timer?
Hot Edge Juice?
ISSPRO boost?
Big line kit and draw straws?

Thanks!

MIA= I removed it

DIY= do it yourself. Look at my pictures. I cut a 4" hole in the bottom of my airbox and put a 4" piece of PVC elbow.

Turbo Timer= A device that allows you to shut your truck off, lock the doors and walk away, but the truck keeps running for a set ammount of time/set EGT temp, and then it turns off by itself. Used to prolong the life of the turbo.

Hot Edge Juice= Edge juice is a performance box, and there is an upgrade for it call 'Hot', it makes it even more vicious than it already is...

ISSPRO Boost= Isspro is a company that makes guages. The boost guage lets you know how much boost your turbo is putting out. Good so that you do not smoke your turbo or blow your head gasket with too much boost.
(see pics again)
Big Line Kit and draw straw= I have a aftermarket fuel pump, a glacier diesel, and you can just hook it up to your regular fuel lines. I upgraded with bigger lines, and the draw straw is the line that goes into the fuel tank and pulls the fuel out. Bigger here, too. Better fuel flow.
(see pics again)
Anything else?

The 03's get considerably better fuel mileage than the newer ones, but have less hp. On mine I get between 10 and 15 mpg better than what the overhead says
