First Oil Change Coming UP

That's interesting about your 2005 manual. I apologize if I am wrong. From a previous thread I could swear the oil change interval dropped to around 3750 or something like it. ptm600, do you have an early 2005? Does your owner's manual have 2005 printed on it?
Maybe that earlier thread was a discussion about that silly and confusing SO oil change at 3750 and it's clouding my pea-sized brain.
What do other 3500 owners show in their manual?

Handymantim, My manual and maintenance log book both say 2005 on them.
O. K. since it is nasty rainy day & I've nothing better to do, I went out & got my maintainance & owners manuals. First off I'd have to say I was wrong in guessing maybe a difference between 2500 & 3500 since both mauals say "DODGE RAM TRUCK DIESEL" no mention of series. Now directly from my service manual. Maintainance Service Schedule "B"
3,750 Miles
Change engine oil and engine oil filter+
+ California LEV (235 hp) Engines Only (see engine data label for your engine type)
7,500 Miles
Change engine oil and engine oil filter*+
*Tier 1 EPA (250 hp or 305 hp) Engines Only (see engine data label for your engine type)
+ California LEV (235 hp) Engines Only (see engine data label for your engine type)
Now, since there is no metion of my engine in my manual (my Engine label says 325 hp) I would assume the 325 hp replace the 305 hp & I don't live in California so I would say mine falls under the 7500 mile interval. that much said, here's the way I intend to service mine;
3750 first change oil & filter to be safe (break in) - done
7500 second chane oil & filter - done
15000 third change oil & filter switch to Synthetic, afterwards 10-15k between oil changes with new filters at half way mark (every 5-7.5k, with oil sampling just to make sure).
I am not trying to save a ton of money on oil changes, but don't want to waste money either. I have been around diesel engines all my life, & see fleet trucks (tri-axles & tractors) run all the time 10-15k between changes (on conventional oil) with no problems ot 400,000+ miles. I understand that diesel engines are harder on oil than gasoline units, but consider that your CTD holds 3 times as much oil as your buddy's gasser. (shouldn't it take longer to break down). I honestly believe this would be more than adequate protection. Sure some will disagree. hope this helps at least 1 person.

guys check out this information, from the CUMMINS web site: engine division, dropdown to

Every Cummins 610 Turbo Diesel is designed for simple, easy maintenance. A single top load fuel filter with heater and water-in-fuel sensor has 15,000-mile (24,141 km) change intervals which match the oil and oil filter change schedule. You have the option of using either CI-4 or CH-4 engine oil at the stated intervals. If CI-4 or CH-4 oils are not available you can use CG-4 oil, but you will have to reduce your drain intervals to 7,500 miles (12,071 km). Valves need to be checked for adjustment at 150,000 miles (241,402 km).

haha... its all kind of funny. It seems like a big difference 3750/7500.....
Anyway, I'm concluding that the general consensus is that oil in my CTD does not need to be done every 3000 or even close, like my 5.9 gasser needed.
Now, should I do it myself or have the dealer do it. Trusting my dealer is not an issue and I am capable of doing it, but which will be more cost effective. I know that with my gasser I could have the dealer do it cheaper than I could buy the stuff for at Wal-Mart. But, I don't know what the dealer charges for the diesel oil change.
thanks,
daniel

our 05's both have 7500/15000 intervals....am i crazy or did i really think that they came our with synthetic oil? one 05 has 5800 mi and the oil was really dirty so we had it changed. i always thought that diesels were notorious for the oil getting dirty faster.no way around here that you could dream of going 15000 without a change too much dirt road driving.
DGM - I would just change it yourself. Filter from Geno's is the place to order filters, most of the time. Order 2 so you have one all set for next change. Local store will probably have Delo 15w - 40w for diesels in stock. I use to use the nylon strap type of oil filter wrench that would use a 1/2" drive rachet. Take off the air intake stuff and give it a try. You will probably be out about $ 25 or so for money and you get to work on your own truck. That way if you happen to notice something else that isn't quite right, you catch those things early and fix them fast if need be.
But this does make me want to go check my manual for my oil change..LOL Just turned 1904 on the odometer. Waiting patiently for that warrany to run out to MOD, MOD, MOD... LMAO.
