Finally Changed the Fluid...

...in my transmission. After 157,000 miles (flame suit on), I finally got around to changing my tranny fluid. I know, I know, should have been done long before now. No need to chastise me for my lack of 48RE maintenance. I didn't realize that they put a donut magnet in the bottom of the pan. After I got the pan loose (what a stinkin' mess) and dropped I noticed this spongy looking thing in the pan. Imagine my surprise when I realized that it was a magnet holding all the metal particles. Nothing other than the fine metal sludge like you will find on the diff plugs. Tranny hasn't had any issues since it was new and fluid looked surprisingly unburnt. Truck is completely stock other than the AFE and Magnaflow. Tow heavy regularly. No sloppy shifts, no apparent slipping. I'm amazed at how well this truck has held up. Only time it was at the dealer was for the lift pump that, fortunately enough, went out at 98,000 miles. Oh, and I took it in by my choosing because of the white smoke TSB (because it was supposed to improve fuel mileage). And when it went in for the lift pump, I was able to convince the service guy that (waves hand in a Obi Wan fashion) "you don't want to put the annoying back up honk TSB on my truck." And they didn't. Next tranny fluid change I think I'll be installing a deep dish pan (if the price of diesel doesn't eat up my entire budget).

Good things usually don't happen to folks who don't do tranny fluid changes........LOL Sounds like my 01' Durango with 4.6... 191,xxx miles and no tranny service. Shop asked me if I wanted a tranny service...... I said NOo!!!!!!!

My old truck was a 96 F-250 gasser and when I sold it there was 186,000 on the factory tranny fluid with plenty of towing. Still shifted great.
