Unhappy Fathers motor has bad oil ring

Dad has an 03' HO with about 165,000 on the clock that he bought brand new in 03' He noticed the other day it started using oil. Took off oil cap while engine was running and had a lot of blow by. Dodge said he has a bad ring or rings on one of his pistons. Is this a known problem or just one of those things. He always has been good about routine maintenance and so forth. So he was pretty bummed out about it. This was his first diesel truck too and has been very happy with it. To add insult to injury he just paid it off in March.

all oil fillers will puff smoke - how bad is it? Like BLOWING out? or a steady haze?

Blowing out. It burns a quart of oil about every 400-500 miles. He said it blew a mist of oil out the filler all over the engine

Dodge may be right, but I would have Cummins look at.

Blowing oil out of the fill nozzle while the engine is running? What your describing is what every engine does.

As far as using a quart every 500 miles is a little high.
As far as the dealer saying it needs new rings without taking the engine apart is just a guess on their part.

Chances are it probably needs rings and a cylinder hone job. However it could be valve seals that have gone bad .
