Fan Roar
Fan Roar
I have just about 1400 miles on my truck and I continue to experience a Fan Roar under certain situations and want to know if others have experienced this and what fix has been applied to take care of the problem?

Roaring Fan. I feel that MY fan comes on at times when it shouldn’t. The CD DODGE manual for the Engine (page 343) states, “It is normal for fan noise to be roaring when:

a. Fan duty cycle high. Outside temperature is very high.
b. Engine loads and temperatures are high such as towing an RV.
c. Cool silicone fluid within the fan drive unit is being distributed back to its normal disengaged (warm) position. This can occur during the first 15 seconds to one minute after engine start-up on a cold engine”.

Mine never comes on a cold engine (see c. above); my definition of a cold engine is one that has not been started overnight. When it occurs It will come on with a roar after the engine is warm or sitting for 5 minutes to an hour (without a load) and then starting the engine. When it happens, it lasts for one to two blocks and then stops. This has occurred when the outside temperature is 40 or 60 degrees. It is never too hot or too cold. The temp gauge reads slightly below normal or normal when this happens. I don’t think a, b or c applies. I also have to add that it does not always happen. Sometime it will go for days before it happens again but has happened many time over the 1400 miles. My friend purchased the same truck that I have on the same day and his is not doing this. Is anyone else having this problem?

Re:Fan Roar
BRDIESEL, Thanks for your reply. I appreciate it.

The fan drive Viscous Clutch I am talking about is controlled by the Engine Control Module (ECM) by monitoring coolant temperature. I do not have the defroster or the A/C engaged when this occurs.

I am attempting to determine if what I am experiencing is normal (it just doesn't seem right to me) and are other individuals having this roaring fan come on at times when conditions seem not to warranty it.
Re:Fan Roar
mine "roars" all the time, hot, cold (cold here is 50) Always when I sit at a light (ac on) when I take off. I figure just nature of the beast. Drawing cooler air through the A/C condenser, intercooler and rad. It does not engage cold start in the morning until I turn ac on and let it idle 1 min before I drive away.
If you run your engine to get any heat in it at all, and then cut the engine off there is not fan running to cool the engine. If you then, start the engine after it sitting for 5 minutes or an hour the fan is going to come on because the engine has what the computer may see as too much heat to have just been started.

My truck functions the exact same way you are describing. My fan will start to run and it will stop after just a short time on the road. I think you've nothing to worry about, but if it's getting you that much then call the dealer.
Re:Fan Roar
Two plus myself with the Fan Roar and one with no roar.

How about the rest of you? Sure would like to hear and to know that it is indeed the norm for this truck.

Thanks to all that provided their information.

My roar is just as you described. It does the same thing as two old gassers I owned and also my old FxxD diesel did. I believe you are just describing a viscous clutch that is computer controlled.
Re:Fan Roar
Do any of you feel that it is really justified for the fan to come on when it does and do you question it the way I seem to and say " I just don't see under the current no load, cool weather conditions that it should not be coming on? I am not saying that is should not roar but that is just seems to come when conditions do not warrent it.
When it really starts getting hot what is it going to do then? I guess time will tell.

If you're building up heat in the motor, and not giving it enough time to cool off from the radiator/passing air, etc. then I would think that after starting the engine back up that the fan would come on to compensate. I could be WAY off on that one, however.

I guess the true test is going to be stop and go traffic on a 95° afternoon with 80% humidity, and the A/C running.
I'll let you know how it goes if it ever gets that warm down here again.

Ken,

We are in low to mid 80's here right now. Almost all running is with the AC. I note the fan always comes on at idle and will stay on thru the first couple of gears, then fades out. It definitely comes on a lot when towing the fiver, again with the AC running. It has never even attempted to get warmer than normal. Maybe these just have a very sensitive fan thermo. I believe it might come on a little more often than the V10, but it has not been sufficient to cause me alarm.

Re:Fan Roar
I appreciate all the responses concerning this situation. I do see I am not the only one having this happen. My previous two Dodge diesels did not do this. It only occurred on mountain pulls and certainly not on straight roads in an unloaded situation. That is justified, but I just don't feel this is without more information. What purpose does it serve. Of course if the majority of us are having the situation occur then it must be normal. Time will tell.

Maybe we can all keep an eye on this and get a feel on what is happening. If it happens it should do it on all vehicles. It has never happened on my friends truck (just like mine). I am not sure but I get the feeling that when you get to 15 or 20 mph that the fan shuts off. Still collecting facts.

Thanks to all.
