Do yourself a favor, take an oil sample and have it analyzed, change the oil and filter, monitor the oil usage, meaure the crankcse pressure if it is over 7" H20 then there is some concern.

Inspect the turbo, the seal could have failed and oil could be entering the boosted air, also a failed tubo shaft seal can cause high crankase pressure. Boosted air can pass the shaft seal and pressure up the crankcase.

Broken rings are caused by dust, the dirt gets behind the ring and it cannot compress and then breaks. If only one cylinder has a broken ring it may be a material failure, if two or more are effected it is dust. Large amounts of dust will also show on the valves as black dots on the valve seat face and wear on the stem.

What is not clear did it suddenly use lots of oil or was it slowly using more?

Started using lots of oil suddenly

It went in to the dealer today to have the head pulled, I guess tomorrow I will know what the damages are, both mechanically and financially

I would say you were lucky to get 100,000 using a k&n air filter

Mechanic says that Chrysler won't admit it but this ring breaking is a common problem that always happens in #1 & #6. They try to blame it on dust. Apparently this is a comon problem on early common fuel rail trucks. He says that he personally does about 3 engines a month from this

Send the engine to K&N and have them pay for it.

So I guess my 04.5 is at risk of this ring failure issue as well. I wanted to run a smarty programmer in the future, but after reading this I am having second thoughts. I have no intentions of overboosting or changing turbos etc. Just wanted a few more ponies and some extra torque in the future. What do you guys think?

All K&N would say it its not there fault the owner didn't re-oil it properly thus they will not pay for any repairs.

Mine is going through some oil too. i plan on putting it back to stock and driving it down a local dealer and buying whatever they got on sale. Hopefully i get 13k for it off a new gasser. cant see buying a new CTD. I just dont need it

I had a 05 Dodge 1/2 ton gaser with the 4.8L V8 and can say I get a lot better fuel mileage from my Cummins then it every could and I also get better fuel mileage then many HEMI's on the road based on those I have talked to and post I've read.

Unfortunately, unless you tow or just want the diesel, the added cost of the diesel never pays off for most people. Plus the cost of diesel is more than premium.

yall have me worried, I have a 06 with 96000 miles, bought new, only mod is straight pipe, will a oil analysis show a problem before one occurs? this one needs to last like my last cummins did. so far best pickup i have ever owned... except the crappy seat. oil change every 5000 miles fuel filter every 10000. could be for sale if i lose confidence in it

Your good, it is really only the modded guys that have issues and the fact that the truck had a K&N filter on it was not good and very possibly the cause of the issue. An oil analysis would show higher than normal Silicone levels. No oil analysis, so he can't really say much.
