Engine Knock

Anyone have an extra knock that is not normal and isn't an injector issue? Dealer can't find a fix and I'm getting the 'your not working it enough' story from STARR. If anyone has had this problem and has found a fix could you let me know what the dealer replaced/fixed? I've had all six injectors and two rocker arm replaced and it still knocks. I know that diesels knock, but there is something extra knocking in mine. In side to side comparisons, the service manager admits there is something not right, but they can not find what is causing this. Any thoughts? It's a distinct metallic knock if that helps any.

At idle and in gear (auto) or under a slight load (manual), or all the time?

Change the fuel filter if you have not, and increase the lubricity of your fuel. Use non detergent oil (10W) works best and/or other commercial fuel additives that boast of lubricity improvers.

There was a guy a long time ago that posted about a weird knock that he had that the dealer couldn't pin down. They tested all injectors repeatedly, replacing several along the way. Ended up taking all the pushrods out and rolling them on a flat counter top and sure enough, had a bent one. Replaced it and the knock was completely gone.

This had to be at least a year ago or more.

Heard of one guy that had a knock that they couldent pin down and turned out to be a broken rod I balive. He said it ran fine and smooth but sounded a little funny. Took a long time to find it. He drove it for a while and had it in several times before they found it. I dont know maybuy Im dreaming but I could have sworn that was the stoty and dont quote me on this but I think it may have been a member buy the name of WhiteSport600 or something like that. Again I know it sounds funny but unless I dreampet it up, I could have sworn thats what he said.

I have a similar problem with my 03 SO. I bought it with 79000 miles on it and within 1000 miles it started a knock. When i took it to dodge they pulled up the history and found that my truck had 2 CP pumps replaced already. They replaced it again and the knock went away for about 2000 miles. Then it returned and I took it to a different dealer and they replaced the cam. This didnt help either. Now my truck is back at the original dealer and they (working with starr over the phone) ran a bunch of tests and checked clearances. They pulled the pistons out and replaced all pistons, rings, bearings, and injectors. They started it back up and the knock was still there. Now they are saying that STARR is approving another pump. My concern is that it probably will knock within 2000 miles.
By the way, this knock will be loud one minute and not so loud the next.
Anyone have any ideas?

My bet is its the CP3. My truck was fine for the first 12K miles. Took it in for a leaking CP3 pump and now it knocks. Just like you said sometimes loud and sometimes not, but only in gear and at idle. If I take it out of gear and let it idle I just get the regular diesel clatter. Drives me crazy, but I'm afraid to take it back. Last time it took over a week to get it fixed and they broke the gear cover which took another week to get.

Mine does it at idle in gear or out, it doesn't make any difference. I suspect it's still there when your up and running, but you just can't hear it. I've told the dealer about the push rod theory, but they haven't checked them (roll test).

Mine also does it in gear or out. Grand, where does it seem like your noise is coming from? Mine seems like in the front of the motor, in front of the pump.

It sounds like it's coming from the top end. It's a real distinct metallic sound.

injector noise

I had injector noise on my 03, a while back on another forum I had read that the noise could be a plugged injector. I put a can 0f SEA FOAM in my tank this is a very good cleaner and it;s cheap NAPA has it as well as AUTOZONE. The noise went away! the second thing I am doing is pouring ACETONE in my fuel, I know this sounds like snakoil but it really works! 2 ounces per 10 gals. only you wont beleive what it does for performance and mileage, not to mention no more injector noise. Here is the website for the ACETONE. PESN.COM

I've had enough of STARR not allowing the dealer to fix the engine knock. They keep telling the dealer that the knock is from high idle and not being worked enough. Well, I do tow with it, although it's not everyday, but we have a JD tractor that we take up north to plan food plots and such. The trailer, tractor and planting equipment all come in around 13,000lbs. It's about 200 mile each way to the property, so I don't buy the not being worked enough story. So, my question is...does anyone have any suggestions? I've had it in for this knock 5 different time and have been without my truck for about 40-days total. I'm thinking lemon law. Anyone with experience or suggestions? Thanks in advance.

i have the same kind of knock but i can only hear mine when truck is in gear and its more pronounced at 1800 rpm. I can be running down the road at 1800 rpm and press clutch and the knock will stop but when i let back off the clutch the knock will start again. it sounds like it's coming from driver's side of engine bay.

mine does it all the time, in gear or in park and only after it's warmed up.

I just got 10,000 on the clock and mine is louder than ever and really driving me nuts. I don't know what to do, I've tried every injector cleaner out there(Stanadyne, Power Service, Sea Foam and Lucas) and nothing. At first I could turn up the stereo or roll down the window and ignore it now when I roll the window down I can hear it outside also. I don't want to take it in and not have it for a week and have the dealer tell me its normal. I would really like to fix this problem.
