Read the manual. It never hurts to be nice to a new engine, why wouldn't you be? But these engines like to be worked and seem to run better afterwards. Taking it a little easy in the beginning gives the whole drivetrain a chance to wear in. Then put it to work.

I would also avoid any extended idling as much as you can, especially while the rings are seating. That's just a good practice anytime to avoid low combustion temps.
I always do my first oil change early around 1 - 2k miles just to flush any potential factory contaminents, flash particles, and early wear metals out and put on a premium oil (Fleetguard Stratapore) filter.
Use a good dino oil (Valvoline Premium Blue or Delo 400 work well) for the first 20,000 miles then you can go to synthetic if you so choose.
I think a variety of driving is good...not just short trips but trips that get the engine up to working temp.
