EGR on 04's? This is what Dodge has to say about it!

Here is a copy of the email I sent Dodge on Sunday, October 5th.

January 2004 Cummins, emissions? EGR?
Comments:
---------
Many rumors have circulated about the High Output Cummins come January
2004.
Will it have an EGR valve? or will it have the "Fleetguard Emissions
Solution"? or products by Nelson to meet EPA emissions requirements?
When will these new standards take place? When will the first vehicles
with these new emission standards come off the production line?

Looking
forward for your reply.

Thank you, Bob

Now, here is their reply:

Dear Robert,

Thank you for your recent email to DaimlerChrysler Motors regarding the
High Output Cummins Diesel engine.

The redesigned High Output Cummins engine is tentatively scheduled to be
released in January 2004. This is also when the standards will take
place and when it will be available in the Dodge Ram.

Our early indications show that it will not have an EGR valve. However,
any further information regarding this engine is unavailable at this
time.

Please continue to visit our website at http://www.dodge.com for newly
released information.

Thank you for writing.

Kinda hints that Cummins or Dodge has found a way to meet the emissions standards without resorting to EGR.

One possible solution though, tuning the engine down a bit (more).

Re:EGR on 04's? This is what Dodge has to say about it!

Right now I don't believe a word they say or type. When I called them to ask. The rep called some other dept to get info on the EGR and was told that they would be using EGR for Jan '04 with production to start as close to Jan '04 as possible, but was hoping to avoid having to start in early December. I think I read somewhere else where someone called DCX and the supervisor read them some stuff about EGR.

Now yours says they most likely will not use EGR. Good Lord man, it's getting awfully close to '04 and if they don't know yet what they will be using, we're going to see the California version of the SOs.

Getting back to where I don't believe them until I see it. How am I to believe what they say/type if they can't even tell me how my order, that they built and shipped, is being delivered to me?

BTW, Cummins has been using EGR for years now. So if that doesn't happen on the ISB for the Dodge, I'll be shocked. Oh, here's some info about Cummins and EGR.

yea, but guys they might have something up their little German sleeves. Just to add to the rumor mill though, a reliable little bird told me there might be a surprise in January. I know EGR has been in production for a year now (school busses and motorhomes) in the U.S. but DC may be motivated to get creative.

Either way, I'm relieved that I have a 2004.0. the new ones, no matter what method they hang on there, are going to be subject to the new regs and big brothers big watchful eye...

yeah, to 'heck' with anything they put on 2004.5's. I was told by DC customer service that 'yes I do show EGR valve on 2004 spec build sheet', however 'anythign built in 2003 will have 2003 spec. Who knows. They can't get their shee-hat straight about build dates, delivery, etc, how can you expect their info to be any better?

No EGR is what they told you?

I was just told last night by a family memeber that an engineer he works with was able to speak directly to a DC engineer who told him more than he was supposed to I guess.

I am still waiting to get the details firsthand as I heard it through someone else so take this with a grain of salt but...

The DC engineer answered a bunch of his questions. I will get all the info.

The new emissions control will be EGR, slight mileage reduction, no significant increase in hp. "get the 03 model". Again, I will need to confirm this but this is what I was told second hand.

Also, the 03 48RE CAN handle and exhaust brake but there is something about the ability for owners to switch in and out of OD that could cause ? damage while braking. If left in OD it will work just fine. The warrenty issue is still going to be a problem. Again, details when engineer back in town but this guy is COMPULSIVE and told me about Fords fueling problems he predicted BEFORE the trucks were out so he has his ways of obtaining information that are outstanding.

I will get more infor when he is back in town.

Would the new EGR necessarily include Canada?

Who cares about EGR....

VVe have VVays to deal with EGR

Now does it have VGT?

I like the Idea of an OE ecu and chasis being set up to control and monitor a VGT turbo.

With EGR, a VGT should be standard as that is what Cummins has been doing.

Figuring out when EGR might show up...

Hello everyone,

I am going to pick up my Black '04 2500 4X4 QC CTD 3.73 LS LARAMIE on 10/14/03. Anyway it arrived at the dealer last night and i went down to look at it, and to take some pictures before some dealer installed accessories are installed.

I ordered my truck on 08/18. It was scheduled to be built on 9/10, it was built on 9/23, it showed up at the dealer on 10/9. As i was looking under the hood to make sure there was no EGR, I noticed the engine was MFG on 9/10. (according to the label on the valve cover) The same day the truck was scheduled to be built!

It seems to me that Cummins and DC might be working closely together to supply engines, and that there is no surplus of '03 engines, so that you should be able to order a truck i would guess maybe as late as 12/01 and still not have to worry about getting an EGR engine.

Just my two cents worth. Also if someone wants to post this info in on the TDR site as i do not have a login there, feel free.

Re:EGR on 04's? This is what Dodge has to say about it!

I have an question...why does anyone really care whether their engine has EGR or not? I understand there can be a slight reduction in mileage, but otherwise what is the big deal.

My family has a '82 MB 300CD with the 5 cyl turbo diesel (OM 617A) that has EGR. It currently has 274k miles and still pulls strong. No work on it other than rebuilding the wastegate.

Why does anyone care? For me, I'd rather not have it because it's just something else that can go wrong and will cost $$$.
