Geez, this is killing me. I was going to drive my truck to work today and seeing how it sat for two weeks, I decided to check my air pressure in the tires. I fire up the truck and let it idle while I walk around the truck with a tire gauge. I got to the drivers side wheel and see something dripping under the fuel filter canister. With a quick swipe of the finger I smelt diesel ! Damit ! Thats what I get for letting it sit. Soooooo, here I am at work wishing I was at home so I can deal with the leak. I did my research already, thank god for the internet ! My question is, my truck is running and I havent had any issues with it yet. My guess it that the four bolts are loose or the o-ring is leaking >?? A bad pump wouldnt leak would it ? Unless it was cracked ? Hopefully the leak will stop with a few turns of the bolts.....fingers crossed.

 

Do you have an in-tank pump? If I read this right the fuel filter canister is leaking - why do you think the pump is involved?


Did you check to see that the water-drain valve at the bottom was closed tightly? Not sure what bolts you're talking about, but the canister seals at the bottom with the water-drain valve lever and the top is a threaded cap sealed with an O-ring. Use a 1 1/8" socket to tighten it up if necessary.

This is a good excuse to change the fuel filter while you're checking things out. Most filters will come with a new O-ring for the top.

 

heres the fuel transfer pump Im taking about. It mounts to the rear of the fuel filter housing. I know its not leaking from the cap/o ring for sure. The transfer pump is attached via four 5mm screws/bolts and has an o-ring in the center. I just cant imagine it would just start leaking just like that ? Truck has 150+ miles.

 

Be sure to check the water drain valve/lever as well as the fuel filter cap. I doubt the pump would leak. For easy access jack up the front and remove the drivers side wheel and take off the plastic inner fender liner. It's a lot easier to get at it that way.

 

alright, got out the drop light saturday night after work and a mirror. Looks like the last time I changed the fuel filter I did not tighten the cap down all the way. I could see the yellow oring in the mirror.......wonder how long it was leaking ? Lesson learned.

 

Glad you found the problem. Remember when troubleshooting a problem always check the simplest easy to do stuff first. However, I have to admit I haven't always followed this path and ended up expending alot of effort only to find I overlooked the obivious.
