Does my 6 speed need its fluid changed
Does my 6 speed need its fluid changed
Got about 40k on 'er now, should I dump the fluid and replace it? I'm gonna put Redline in it when the time comes, just wondering if its time yet?
Willing to listen to ALL opinions
I need to do mine. I'm sitting at 67,000 miles right now and it's still got the original oil in the tranny. Still got the original Michelin tires too (I'm trying to make them last 70,000 miles).
I haven't changed the tranny oil because frankly I kind of dread messing with it. I guess I need to do it though.

I was lazy and only did mine at 46,000 miles. The oil came of quite black which surprised me. Almost nothing on the magnet, just some ultra fine sludge. Installed Redline, but have not noticed that much difference so far. A little, but not as much as I expected.

The Pennzoil will run you about half price compared to the dealer stuff; same fluid, different bottle.
You'll need a 17 mm hex head socket to remove the fill plug (tighten to 22 ft-lbs). You can either completely remove the left side (driver) PTO cover and clean the magnet & inspect (have RTV on hand) or simply remove the lowest (middle, 6 o'clock position) bolt...this is actually the drain bolt (tighten to 30 ft-lbs).
This pic should aid in whats involved. I used a 14 mm six point socket to remove the lower most PTO Bolt....this is also the drain bolt for the NV5600. After re-filling and test driving, the NV5600 felt as if it shifted slightly easier than before....lots of members on both the TDR & DTR sites have noted the same results as well.
All in all, it's a very easy job and requires little effort...it's easier than changing the engine oil & filter.
