DIY 48re re-build???
DIY 48re re-build???
Now, I'd pondered on posting this or not, but might as well, I figure some other fellas on here must as bold, or stupid as I am. Is it at all possible to perform a tranny re-build in your garage, if you get all the parts, and a manual, and some solid coaching or at least advice from people who make their living doing it? Basically, I'm too cheap to pay the $3000-$4000 CAD for a new drop-in tranny, and the current tranny has lost 3rd gear for sure and I'm thinking has started to shred steels (blackened fluid with particles, and burnt smell). Any feedback good or bad is appreciated, oh, and I'm pretty good with diesels, just never extensively pulled apart an auto tranny. All responses welcomed.
It can be done and shouldn't be that bad. The 48re is the same as a 727 with OD. You'll need a couple special tools, but buying them will be cheaper then paying someone. If you've got someone you could barrow them from that would be even better. IIRC you'll need access to a press also. Here's a good source for manuals http://atsg.biz/
wow, thanks for the info, that really helps, I'm just compiling everything I need right now--aftermarket TC, rebuild kit, good manual, etc... So I'm gonna attempt this tranny rebuild in the next month or so on my next days off. And I have to parachute the truck cause' it won't fit in my garage and it's usually about -15celsius (5)ferenheit, at this time of year. This thing will definetely be a learning experience, but as a HD mechanic friend of mine says--don't let fear and common sense hold ya back.
Your going to need a hydraluic press too. Dont try to remove the snap ring from the OD-direct clutch drum without one. That spring will cause you major physical damage to yourself if you try. That spring in that drum can allmost hold up your truck!
That's okay my buddy across the street owns a machine shop, and he's got a 50 ton press with all sorts of inserts and collars for different sized bushings, pins etc... Thanks for the info though, every bit helps.
when you finish can you post your results and lessons learned? I am also too cheap to pay for a new tranny and depending on your success may just do my own too.
I have pulled apart a couple of 727s over the years as well as the 904s that I blew up I just wonder about electronics and such. Any thing you post will help.

sure, when I get it all said and done I'll post up everything, but don't hold yer breath, I'm still in the planning stages with all this, I hope to have it complete in 2 months max.
Hey I am in the same shoes!!! Dusty at hts said he would sell me all the parts, rebuild the over drive, for free (takes special tools) ,and walk me thro it if I needed help.Stephen at dtt said he would do the same,200 to rebuild the over drive,I am leaning towards hts,but have no auto experiance

i went with HTS for my rebuild kit.
and to the thread starter i spent about 3K in parts doing it myself with the help of a friend, well he did it and i helped. still cheaper than buying a built one or getting someone to build it.
The only other advice I can give is make sure you have a digital camera and take pictures as you go. It helps alot if when you're putting it back together and arent sure about which way a part goes.
the guy that did it for me(TOMTOM) had previously done his own tranny. so that made it not so bad. still a lil stressfull. if you have the luxuary, do the build during the week so you ll be able to call someone if you have a question.
it wont be bad if you have
lift
impacts
port a power
transmission jack
extra hands
press
a vice to hold the tranny vertical
various snap ring pliers
service manual
transmission manual
BC847 on here in the 1st gen section did a right up on the rebuild of a older tranny but their all basically the same.
