differential fluid change questions
A few easy tips on how to change
- on my 05 there is a fill line stamped into the diff cover a little lower than the bottom of the fill hole & off to the side a bit - kinda faint but it's there.
- an Allen wrench makes a good 'dip stick' - wipe it clean and put the short end thru the hole and rest it on the bottom of the opening - oil level shows up really well
- pick up some clear tubing to fit over the tip on the gear oil bottle - I find it's easier to get the oil in that way than trying to squeeze it x
straight from the bottle especially on the front diff

Make sure you clean the outside of the diff case around the gasket area and on top before you take any bolts out. Use a stiff brush to get at the space above the gasket and between the case and cover. You might even try some brake cleaner or what have you.
I you don’t dirt and debris will fall on the ring gear since it sticks out past the case. Throw a clean rag or towel on top the ring gear when you get the cover out too, then check to make sure the gears are clean before you put the cover back on. Wipe out the bottom of the diff case too.
These AAM axles are quite stout, but even they won’t put up with contamination. I threw a strong magnet in the bottom of mine to help out the magnetic plug.

Also want a cool looking rear cover thats... time, test and proven to work good and look good. Also what oil and weight should I use? I run a lot of short stops but do a road trip or two thats 1000 miles non stop and back is another 1000miles.
