im planning to start my cam swap tonight, anyone remember off hand what size wooden dowels i need to pick up, was it 3/8" or 1/2"??

What kind of coolant needs to be run in these trucks?
Use 1/2" wooden dowels, slitting the end with a hacksaw. Round off slightly with a file, and burn with a torch to eliminate splinters if you want.

Recommended coolant is HOAT. It's available here at Napa.

I would like to see a killer write-up... While you work your truck harder than I do I think we have the same goals and usage.

i had pdr do the first cam took them 10 hours the second one we did 14 hours i think a diesel shop would be about 12 hrs the hardest part for us was building tools mainly sticks to hold the lifters up. the oil still turns black because the 3rd pulse is still a little to far from the second .the smarty has variable timing advance where the rocktec is fixed . we picked up about the same mpg with the jr as we did with the pdr . but combined we gained more than the sum when towing .ie 1.2 for the cam and 1.3 for the jr but combined gave us 3.2 mpg increase. some of the good mods was the dynatrac free spin hubs , it did not help the mileage as much as we expected but the 2wd low reverse is worth it you will spend half a day backing a trailer around with it wondering why you did not do this sooner , the cfm+ and grid heater delete was good and not to expensive the 5" turbo back exhaust and donoldson m90535 muffler helped some and quiet for about $300, the afe hurt mileage we tore the baffles out of the elbow that hurt mileage what we ended up with is psm mod to oem, cool hose and tag .the gain is so small over stock it will never pay fore itself and the money on afe was total waste , the most expensive lesson was ats talked us into a a3000 turbo and a second cp3 pump the theory was the turbo with 14 exhaust housing would decrease back pressure and the cp3 would keep a constant injection pressure across the pulse they claimed 2 mpg gain while towing the charged $6,400 for the mod and i got 0 mpg gain over a 2,600 mile trip , it is throwing a p0299 code about every 1,500 miles and ats has not responded to email . back to the roktec the tdr people think more timing than the jr is giving may help i think i will try one or may bee a tst to see ,i think in reality i should wait for someone to move the pulse , this is the only good way to solve this problem

Interesting that you want more timing than the Jr has when Marco feels the timing, low boost, and our poor fuel are what lead to the smoke.. .hence retarded timing on the beta tune in the lower rpm band (I got ~2mpgs from switching to the beta tune due to all the fuel I am saving by not blowing smoke)...

As far as you have gone, removing the 3rd event and retiming the 2nd one is going to give you more gain than anything.

This cam removal is on a 24 valve, but should be helpful. There's more videos. This is just the highlights. Just search "KDP Damage" on youtube.

ah64id the 4 beta tune on the jr helped a bunch i did not know what marty did . the more i think about it i think i will wait for some one like marty to move the pulse and go with it rather than waste more money. moving all three pulses at the same time more than the smarty jr is not going to gain enough to help if it would have , marty would have done it in the beta

you got 2 mpg over the original smarty jr? or you got 2 mpg total. im running the original jr software and got a solid 2 mpg over stock, and have been contemplating going to beta 4. if it picks up additional mileage, i will do it for sure. i only run the 40hp program.

carl48,

Some of the people I've talked to say 2 degrees is more then enough of an advancement for an 06 engine. So you feel we need more then 2 degrees advanced timing that the Rokteck can give? How much more advancement 2 degrees do you think the timing needs be to help boost fuel mileage?

No problem. Someone posted it in the general diesel section. I found pretty informative for anyone looking to do a cam swap.

Oh it will gain more, it just has to be done correctly. For most purposes the 3rd event is not even needed once you change out the cam. Advancing the cam timing itself will also help if that wasn't done on the install.

I don't really know what the orginal tune gave me as I only had driven this truck about 2K on winter fuel prior to the Jr... But my beta 4 average is up 2 mpg from my std software mpg... I am driving a bit more mellow, but not 2mpg worth.
