cool down timer?

I've read many posts regarding a cool down timer to let the egt's come down so one doesn't fry the turbo bearings. what exactly does everyone use, a kitchen timer, a stopwatch? also, how long do you let the engine idle before shutdown after pushing it hard? thanks in advance

Check out this article https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/cooldown.php

You can buy it here..http://store.dieseltruckresource.com/hoco.html

Also, there is a good table of cool down times in the owners manual.

FYI, I installed one of Howards cool down timers in my truck. I use it ALL the time. Not just for cooling down, but also as a way to avoid start up and shut downs. Like when I need a key on the ring to do something, like unlock the camper or unlock the hitch pin. Great tool!!

I'm taking mine on it's first journey this week..around 600 miles one way, just luggage wife and kids. How long should you let cool down with that long of a trip at sustained speeds of 70-75? Or do you even need to unloaded. Going from Kentucky to Gulf Shores so it's not a hiily ride.

Depends on how far you idle it before shutting it down. If you are rolling at 75, pull off real quick at a rest stop, give it a minute or two to cool down.

If you exit the interstate and drive a few blocks easy before parking, you probably only need about 30 seconds to hit a safe temp. This is assuming you are not pulling a load of any kind.

Do yourself a favor and get an EGT gauge mounted pre turbo, it will change forever how you treat the turbo

With my Cool down timer, I usually leave it set on the lowest setting when empty, and longer when I am towing heavy in the mountains where I live.

A cool down timer is a very handy thing to have,(I have one) but the EGT gauge and transmission temp.(if you have an auto) are much more important in my opinion.
