Connecting Rod pictures
 

A while back I saw a picture of the connecting rods side by side of the Cummins, PSD, and D-Max. It was either here or on Turbo Diesel Register. Now that I would like to use it again I can't find it. Can someone be of help?<br><br>BTW I ordered on Feb 13 and my truck showed up at the dealer on March 18. I'll pick it up on Thursday. Not too bad a wait. <br><br>Thanks for your help and suggestions.

I remember the pic, but the pic of the Chevy rod was off an old 6.5 and not a Dmax ::)

The smaller connecting rods in the Ford and Chevy are inherent in the design of a V-8 configuration. The motor is shorter with 4 crankshaft connecting rod journals sharing space for two connecting rods each. The inline six crankshaft simply has the room for the larger connecting rods because each journal has only one connecting rod and the engine is longer. As long as Ford and GM continues to use the V block they will always have the smaller rods. One of the reasons the really big diesels are inline designs. Hope that makes sense.

[laugh] [laugh]<br><br>Sorry guys, I didn't stare at that little blue tag close enough - - I was just enthrawled with the difference in the sizes and could never believe these all came out of similar size diesel engines. They did, right? ??? ??? Amazing how much larger the Cummins is than the others. Hey, I like my truck even more now. Yep, I do. [laugh] [laugh]<br><br>Now, if I could only find my driving glasses - - found the reading ones, but man, where are those driving ones? I think we need a new pic with new ISBe, PSD 6.0, and Duramax Con Rod pics!!!!<br><br>Come on, somewhere someone out there has these!!! ;D

Well this isn't a conrod pic of the 6.0 PSD but you can see what a wimpy crankshaft it has

:o I hope to goodness that is not the timing gear on the front of that crank!!!!!! My Schwinn bicycle sprocket was thicker than that!!!

My Schwinn bicycle sprocket was thicker than that!!!<br>[/quote]<br><br>No its tone ring or crank trigger for the tack and ECM/PCM.<br><br>The Cummins rods are indeed very strong, but when one looks at the loads they have to handle they are just marginally stronger than the PSD and Chevy.<br>The Cummins piston is one heavy chuck of metal and the rod needed to deal with that inertia will always be large. Two things you notice when you have one in your hand is the bearing surface area on both ends of the rod. Very large.<br>The crankshaft is heavy as well, but it has to hold up the 6 large rods and pistons swinging around. <br><br>Don~<br><br>

I thought the Cummins rods were a lot stronger than the PSD and Chevy's, even the 6.0L and the Duramax, because the Cummins rods are cast in one piece and the Ford/Chevy rods are powdered metal poured into a mold and flash-heated? I know that strength isn't all about how big it is, but how it's made. <br><br>ascraeus
