Comparison of the SO 47RE and HO 48RE
Re:Comparison of the SO 47RE and HO 48RE
..Update....We had our first ho 48re come in that wasn't sold yet. After it got pdi'd, I warmed it up and took it out for a ride. QC 4x4 3.73's......what a monster. That truck would waste my so 47 really bad(and my S.O. runs strong..I have driven several). I was really impressed how freakin hard the ho auto pulls. I still love my truck, but there is a world of diff between the two engines.

My new high output/48re arrived today and I will pick it up Friday morning. I have logged 7,500 miles on my '03 standard output/47re and I have a good feel for it. I will post my opinions on the new truck as soon as possible.

Add me to the list of happy SO/47RE owners. Tows my 6000-7000 lb. trailers with ease, and comfort for the wife and I. I did recently add an Edge EZ which makes a ton of difference even at the recommended power level setting of 2 (has 4 adjustable levels). I did have a couple minor issues with the EZ that are being resolved by Rod at Wildcat Diesel and Aaron at Edge. (great customer service at Wildcat - highly recommend them if anyone is thinking of BOMB's ;D)

I drove my new HO around town today, lets just say night and day difference with the new motor, tranny, and gears. This thing straight cooks! I did'nt experience any weird shifting or anything. I can definatly tell it has an LSD on the back. My SO did'nt have one and everytime I went around a street corner to quick it would start slipping, not this one!

I logged 14K on my SO 47RE and I can say it was definately worth the switch. I can't wait to slap a heavy trailer on the back. I only have 200 miles on the new truck so I will definately see some more improvements with performance as time passes. She's going in next week to get the Ameriguard liner put in. I'll post some pics when I get a chance. ;D
Re:Comparison of the SO 47RE and HO 48RE
I just picked my new truck on Monday. 2500HD Quad Cab Long Box, HO with 48RE and 4:10 Rear End. I just turned my '99 Ram, a 2500HD Quad Cab Long Box, 47RE and 4:10 Rear End. I haven't pulled my rig (1999 Sea Hawk 33FRL 13,500lb. loaded) yet, but I can tell you that the new HO and tranny are really something. There is no comparison between the two. People pulling light weights (8000lb. and under) should plan on putting a minimum of 100K miles on with 50% towing utilization. If not they are wasting money on a diesel. Heck, I had a '94 Chevy 1500 with a 350 and 3:55 rear end that would pull my 31' Prowler Trailer weighing 8100lb wet all over the country getting 8 mpg when towing and 16 - 18 mpg solo. The extra expense for a diesel won't be off set for a long time. Just do the math. You caan buy a lot of gas for $5200. If they want a Dodge they should go with the Hemi or the 6.0 in a GM truck. My '99 did ok with my Sea Hawk 12-13 mpg and 19 - 24 solo., but I know this new truck will do GREAT!!! With the HO , the power is there instantly. It's much quicker off the line and can tell it will pull the grades much easier than the '99. If your going diesel, spend the little extra and go for the HO or go for the Hemi. Gale Banks has sold millions of $$$ to people underbuying and then throwing away good parts just to put the parts on that should have been there in the first place. When you consider the small difference in price (heck the Infinity Radio option is $750 by itself) it makes no sense but to go HO if you trully need the power.

This has been cured.

And something else I couldn't believe is that Edge shipped the EZ with a boost elbow thats too long for the turbo, and the wrong connector for the fuel pressure sensor. The current connector will work, but I wasn't happy about it and called Edge and chewed them out. They're working on getting the proper connectors, and having the boost elbows trimmed to fit properly.

Rod
Re:Comparison of the SO 47RE and HO 48RE
I bought a SO 5 speed. I really like the 5 speed trany and I saved a little $. I drive around unloaded 99 % of the time. I've got a tool box with tools, bumper jack, chains, and other seasonal stuff on the back. I could get by with a gasser, but why should I. I'm planning on BOMBing a little bit, so the HO to SO don't mean much to me. My old 2001 SO 5 speed did the quarter in 14.26 after a Comp box and stage one injectors and a clutch. I don't think a stock HO will do that.
Re:Comparison of the SO 47RE and HO 48RE
I think your missing the point. The HO will haul anything in the 3/4 - 1 ton range quite nicely and without spending lotsa extrra $$$$ doing so. 3/4 - 1 ton trucks are made for hauling, not drag racing. If I wanted a quick 1/4 mile and didn't need to haul I go woth the Hemi.
Re:Comparison of the SO 47RE and HO 48RE
Nope, not missing the point. Planned on putting a box and maybe some injectors in this truck when I bought it. It's my farm truck and my toy. I loved taking my 2001 SO to strip, those stock mustangs didn't stand a chance.
I guess some people just don't understand the world of high performace diesels, they are not just for pulling anymore.

Diesel trucks have much higher resale than a gasser. Plus I can save about $3,000 to $4,000 a year on fuel when running a diesel. Slow driving around the farm, stopping to check irrigation well and pivots, diesels don't use much fuel. But a gasser will just drink it. The heat that comes off of a gasser is unreal in the hot summer when putting around the farm with the a/c on. Not to bad on a diesel, a diesel runs cooler putting around than it does driving down the highway.

Test drove a Hemi, barely faster than my wifes 2002 1500 4x4 5.9, and the one I drove was a 2wd 1500. Hemi is rated at 345hp and the wifes truck is rated at 245hp. The Hemi felt like it maybe 20hp more than the 5.9, but it wasn't broken in yet so I don't know.

I think it's kinda cool that we get a choice when it come the the drive tran on the Dodge trucks. We have a choice of two manuals and an auto and two hp levels. It's not like it's two different motors, just two different hp levels. I bet the only thing different is the programming between the HO and the SO. But I could be wrong, believe it or not, it's happened before.

whats the difference between the 47RH and the 47RE?
My 95 gasser 1ton 4x4 has a 47 RH. thats what it says under the hood.

If I am not mistaken the 47RH is Hydraulicaly controlled hence the "H" and the 47RE is electronically controlled hence the "E".
Swayse, In addition to different programming I think the High Outputs also has different pistons and special nozzles that spray oil on the pistons to cool them.

well..I hate my 47RE ...right when the motor feels good it shifts and thats ok but when trying to pedal a little faster like getting on the freeway, it wont shift AT ALL for 10 to 15 seconds EVEN AFTER I let off the throttle...anyone else had this happen...other than that it is faster and smoother and WAY quieter than my Ford PSD.... ;D
my two cents
Cameron
