code p1740

I did a search and read almost every thread. No one said what fixed it. My truck has the code now and it seems to drive fine. I would like to hear from those who have had the code and what the problem turned out to be?
Thanks, Paul

P1740- TCC O/D SOL PERFORMANCE (DIESEL)
  • When Monitored: The Torque Convertor Clutch (TCC) and Overdrive Clutch (O/D) will be tested each time the ECM requests TCC engagement in 3rd gear and O/D.
  • Set Condition: The DTC will set if the expected RPM drop is not achieved while attempting to engage TCC or O/D. This indicates a malfunctioning torque convertor or overdrive clutch.
Possible Causes
  • ENGINE DTCS PRESENT
  • TRANSMISSION DTCS PRESENT
  • TRANSMISSION TEMPERATURE TOO COLD
  • OIL PAN CONTAINS EXCESSIVE DEBRIS
  • 3-4 SHIFT SOLENOID
  • SHAFT OR SEAL DAMAGE
  • TCC SOLENOID
  • TORQUE CONVERTER

unless you have a scantool to do the tests.. it's going to be hard for you to troubleshoot this code.

Did you replace your TC recently? Mine threw that code after I replaced my TC and VB. It's due to the higher stall TC than the stocker. If you clear the code it will come back. I eventually had my dealer remove the engine check light and just leave the code.

Its a 04.5. The Torque converter was replaced under warranty about a year and a half ago because it was slipping. The truck has under 70,000 miles on it so I assume warranty will cover it?

Yes it should be under warranty. Take it to the dealer and have them troubleshoot the problem. If it's an aftermarket TC then go to who ever installed it and have them check it out.

If it shifts fine then more than likely it's throwing it because of the rpm not dropping enough from shifting into 3-4 gears and the computer on the truck thinks something is wrong.

When my code was thrown about a week after the install. I called BD Performance and my diesel mechanic and both told me it's common when changing out the TC w/ something aftermarket. They said it is very common especially on California Emmision trucks. Different PCM software than the Federal Emmision trucks.

Truck went to the dealer today. They say the transmission needs to be rebuilt. This truck has near 70,000 miles and the torque converter was replaced ones already by the dealer because it was slipping. Now a rebuild. Did I get a bad trans? Will it be like new after they are done? What do you think? Its a 04.5 with a 48re.

That's a tough question to answer..............I'd say it will be rebuilt after they are done. It will still be a factory stock 48RE and a factory stock torque converter. This tranny is on Dodge and that's worth something in my book. The next time it fails (and it will), bite the bullet and replace it with an after-market unit from Goerend Transmission or BD Performance. And be sure to buy the matching torque converter and flex plate. The stock converter has a single clutch and is easily over-powered. The TCs from Goerend or BD are billet units with multiple clutches that can take lots of HP and torque. You will spend lots of money for these trannys, but you will not have to buy another one. Good luck.

Do a search for this code on here or search my name on here & read about my horror w/ this code & it was stock then. I STILL have not been able to get DC to rebuild my tranny. Where are you from?

They are a good dealer. They may actually let you buy your own TC and install it with the job. Yeah, it'll cost you $1200 but you have peace of mind knowing it won't blow up on you again too.

My '05 threw this code a few days ago too. Feels like it shifts fine. It's been on a few days, so it doesn't seem to want to clear itself. I'll have to bring it in and see what they say. It has barely 31,000 on it.
