Transfer case is not required until 60k miles. I did mine at 45k miles.

If you still want to do it, it uses the ATF+4 oil. Same as the transmission. I forget the quantity, but believe it is about 3 qts. or maybe 4.

The transfer case... both the NV271 and the NV273 takes a little over 2 quarts of ATF+4 transmission fluid. I use Valvoline ATF+4 because it is readily available at NAPA.

You will need a 10 mm Hex socket bit in order to remove the drain and fill plugs.

Always a good idea to remove the fill plug first. It would be a bad day if you drain the transfere then come to find out the fill plug will not break loose.

Are the fill plugs causing that many problems breaking free? If so, I guess some PB Blaster soaking overnight is in order to be safe? I should be doing mine pretty soon so thanks for the heads up.

Mine was a little dark so I'm glad I did it. The transmission (6 spd) still looked new but I changed it anyways. Also at the 45k miles mark.

Yes! I remove the skidplate in order to eliminate the fluid from creating a mess.

Did mine this weekend. Remove the skid plate (4 - 13mm bolts) and it took about 2.5 qts (ATF +4). You shouldn't have any trouble removing the plugs but if the off chance that something did happen it is always best to make sure you open the fill plug first that way you are sure you can put fluid back in.

just cuz they say 60k doesnt mean you should do it that late. depends on how hard you use the truck.

Climbed under a little earlier to check it out and I did see the 2 big allen bolts. Thanks for the heads up.
