Calling all Common Rail Gurus
Calling all Common Rail Gurus
As you can see from my sig, I have an 03 cummins in an 01 Ford. I just installed the Edge CTS. I am looking at rail pressure. At idle the display is reading about 6000 PSI. At cruise it is about 12K to 14K. At WOT It's reading about 18.5K. Is this about right for a truck with a stock CP3 and stock injectors? It seems low to me.
Thanks!

I agree with Steve, your rail pressure values sound right for a stock 2003.
The 2003-04 5.9L engines run lower rail pressures than the 2004.5-2007 5.9L.
I wonder if the Smarty ECM program is re-mapping your rail pressure sensor?
The CTS does not directly read the rail pressure from the rail pressure sensor. It reads the rail pressure via the OBDII port from the ECM.
The readings could be erroneous.
This applies to your boost readings also. The boost levels your CTS is displaying could be erroneous.
Have you tried setting your ECM back to stock with your Smarty programmer and then note your rail pressure values?

I thought I pulled all of the smarty programs out of the ECM before I installed the CTS.
NEW QUESTION. Since the Edge is pulling all of its data from the ECM, does that mean a boost fowler would not be seen by the Edge and continue to read 20PSI max pressure.
Thanks for al the input. It's been very helpful. I've read too many nightmare stories about injectors and I'm not ready to dive into new ones yet.

Excessive rail pressure will reduce the life of your injectors. I use tha Banks setup and run the truck on level 3 99%. I have tried position 6 a few times for a few seconds, but not more. I am just under 100k on the original injectors and doing fine. I installed the Banks stuff at the 200 mile mark, effectively since new. It is true that the Banks stuff is much more conservative than the other power boxes and I am hoping that that will translate to injector longevity........we will see.

I thought the Edge CTS was an OBDII scanner/gauges and not a programmer for the early common rails?
The Edge Juice with Attitude is an interceptor box not a programmer.
Which one do you have?
There should be no need for a boost fooler these days. And yes, a boost fooler will make the OBDII boost readings completely false.

I have the Evolution CTS. It has four power levels. It does produce a lot more smoke than the Smarty Jr. ever did. It sounds like I would have to set the boost up at the sensor to get an accurate reading if a boost fooler was added. Right?
