A/C compressor grinds sometimes

I am trying to get the truck to the dealer tomorrow because the A/C compressor will make a grinding sound when I first turn it on. It only happens 1 time every day. If I shut it back off and turn it back on it is fine.

To me it sounds like the clutch part is the problem and not the actual compressor. Any body else have this happen??

My 2003 AC compressor makes a "grinding/Clunck" type sound ever since I got it new-usually when I turn on the AC for the first time for that day. This may or may not be the same type noise you are talking about. I have yet to discover a fix.

I just talked to a friend of mine and his 06 does the same thing. I don't remember it doing it this loud last summer so I might still have it looked at by the dealer. If they say it is normal I will just have them document it for future reference.

With all three dodge trucks I have owned I sometime get a bit of belt cirp and a thump when that solenoid first goes off. . . .A/C keeps on working.

Its normal from what I hear. The clutch engages a little hard the first time and it clunks pretty loud.

Thanks for the replies. It does sound like it is pretty normal. I'll probably wait and see how it goes. Maybe I am being paranoid.

Mine has been doing the same thing except mine also makes that same clunking noise just after I start the truck up even with the ac off???? (I have had my wife start the truck while i look at the compressor and it engages for about 3/4 turn)Then when I turn the ac on it makes the same clunk again. The first clunk happens only when I have been running the ac on my previous drive. If I haven't been using the ac it wont make that first clunk at start up. I hope this makes sense... Other than that it works perfect. I put a meat themometer in my vent and it blows 50 degrees right out the vent.
