I have been into diesel trucks for a while now..theres just something I find amazing about diesel trucks. I have been looking for a cummins for a while now but in VA beach they are verrry hard to come by. I found an 03 2500 cummins for sale with 168k miles on it. What mileage is too much for these trucks in terms of purchasing one? What are some things I need to look at and check out before buying? Ive heard about injector pumps going in 2nd gen. dodges, is there the same problem with 3rd gen.? Any info would be helpful. Thanks

 

i never owned a diesel but have friends that have them and gave me positive feedback.

I bought a 2005, 2500 quad cab, 2 wheel drive with 41K miles.

so far a great truck, comfortable, great mpg, 22.6 on last road trip.

I just did the normal maintenance items and it seems to be a good truck.

Guess it depends on what you had before, i had a bottom of the line gm 2500 gas that rode rough and got very poor mpg.

ask the local ambulance service where they buy fuel and you buy there. these trucks do like good quality clean fuel and good filters.

Anyway...

I've got almost 210,000 miles on mine and the lift pump is the only problem child item I've had to work on. I eliminated that at 100K and the twin holleys hanging underneath have worked flawlesly ever since.
The trans got freshened at 130K and so far so good. On the second set of brake pads and second set of tires since new.
I can't complain... hope your new purchase turns out half as good or better and you'll be a happy camper.

 

thanks guys..any major problems with the automatic trans? I know for a while dodge was having problems with the autos, wish I could find a manual but they are **** hard to find..

 

If it has not been rebuilt, better plan on doing it.

 

When do they usually start having problems? Should I just stay away from the automatic?

 

automatic transmissions will need a rebuild periodically just because the seals in the clutch packs get hard over time........some last longer than others, heat seems to be the determining factor on the life of the automatic trans ...........
