Ball joints

Got my truck back from my mechnic he is telling me I need ball joints badly all four. I have had this truck for about two weeks now should I call the dealership and tell them this or am I just pissing in the wind cause I bought this truck as is but I feel they should have caught this.

The thing you have to keep in mind is that many technicians don't seem to realize that ball joints have a wear spec. These joints are actually allowed over .100" of axial (up and down) movement before replacement is required. Some shops will try to sell ball joints at the first sign of any movement. I'm not saying this is what happened here, but just so you are aware and can find out the story before you talk to the dealership. I would definitely ask this guy how much play he measured and how far over the spec they are. If you have numbers to go by, the dealership will have a lot less of a credible argument.

Do you have any front tire wear? The first time I did my ball joints was just a hair over a 100k. I did have tire wear at the time but it turned out to be just an alignment issue. Just did ball joints again at almost 300k because both front tires were absolutely SLOPPY in the "play" department and I had severe tire wear this time. Went with the XRF's from TireClub along with the upgraded steering system and it drives like a new truck now.

Just jack the front end off the ground and check for yourself if there is any major up/down or back/forth movement to the front wheels.....if so, balljoints are the issue.

That's good to hear. They sound like a pretty decent shop.
