I have an 06 2500 4x4. Jacked up the balljoints have some play in them. What is the tolerance? Thanx,

Paul

2003 was .020 in. if that helps, not sure if 2006 is the same.

I think the specs are the same. There should be VERY LITTLE PLAY. I need to check mine with a dial indicator.

How do you check them? Do you put a prybar under the tire (after it's jacked) and just see how much the wheel moves up and down?

Exactly Hercules. If there is a noticeable amount of play then one or more is bad.

I took my truck in about 3 weeks ago for a front end alignment. The service told me that my ball joints had about .040 play but Dodge allows up to .090 play. Since I pull a 15k trailer I replaced all 4 front end ball joints. This was erring on the conservative side.

The prybar method of testing is fine to show there is some movement but the play really should be measured to know for sure.

Dealer told me on my 04.5 that above .060 on upper and .090 on lower was where they replace ball joints at. I believe that was what he said, could be backwards and could be wrong completely.

Just got new ujoints and ball joints from Napa.
***** went for 75 and ujoints 35 all are greasable.
Got the press a few weeks back now for the time to do it.
Last truck took 3-4 hrs per side to do it all.
Will post up when I get it done and give some pictures.

I think you are correct.

All our trucks would fail at that .020 number stated above. That is for 2wd 1/2 trucks.

Yes, to check the lower ball joint the jack must be placed under the axle or control arm. Use a long pry bar to pick up the tire. Measure the slack at the joint.

The upper joint is the follower joint and should be tested unloaded. Lift the truck by the frame and check for play at the upper joint.
