Baldwin PF7977 fuel filter, does NOT fit!

Hello,
HOW do you get the Baldwin PF7977 filter to fit straight on the fuel filter cannister top?
Over the weekend I was trying to replace fuel filters w/ a new Baldwin PF7977 filter.
It will NOT fit on the top!
It only goes on cocked, not straight, no matter how or what I try.
This filter is tapered, the part that goes on the canister top is larger than the bottom, correct?
The bottom of this filter has the hole, the top has a recessed depression.
I even tried forcing it between two 2x4s.
Amazing the top didn't crack or break.
Also, I can NOT screw the top back down w/ the filter in place!
Guess, I HAVE to re-use the old one, until I can get a new one.
What a total drag this was.
Maybe I got a bad one?
Anyone experience this?
Oh, this is w/ a 2006 5.9.

I don't have an issue with the PF7977. Snaps right into the canister lid.

Did you check to see if the seal from the old filter is stuck at the bottom of the canister?

I second Mikey B, sometimes the rubber ring will stay in there just like an oil filter can...

I'll second that also, been using them (PF7977) for a few years now with-out any problems at all.

I think his problem is the filter will NOT go in to lid before it screws on.

buggz - I installed the metal filter canister lid from Geno's, and have the same issue with all brands of OEM replacement filters. Easy fix - I just wrap a rag around the filter body to keep crap out, then use a file and just drawfile around the edge of the plastic top a couple times, or until it fits - takes about two minutes.

I've never seen a tapered fuel filter. You could have the right part # but wrong filter.

It doesn't just "Fit" in. You will actually need to snap it in place.
