Bad injector? Help!
Bad injector? Help!
Truck in my sig has 9000 miles on it. Out at work for a few days, so I can only perform simple tasks on the truck right now. I'm getting no smoke at idle, but quite a bit more black smoke when getting on it than I used to. Truck idles just slightly rough at startup. So I pulled the air filter (original one) and its fairly dirty, but not totally wrecked. So I pulled the dipstick and its about a quarter inch past the full mark. I cannot smell diesel in the oil. Should I be able to? Truck never idles long. I don't hot rod the truck real bad, but do have the superchips on performance. Nearest dealer is 50 miles from me and the dealership from which I bought the truck is 150 miles away.
Well I saw posted if you drip a few drops of the oil on a paper towel if there is diesel in it, it will show as light colored spot around the black oil spot. Not sure if it works, but sounds probable. I check mine weekly since I have had a bad injector and one stick open recently. I have not had any increase in oil levels so far though.
Are the egt's higher than normal. How long did you let the truck sit before checking the dipstick? It takes a while for the oil to settle. I would check it again in the morning. You might want to check the fuel filter and run some fuel additive in it to clean the system. Maybe you already did this, just some suggestions.
Egt's seem normal, I keep a regular log of guage readings. Truck sat for 10 hours before I checked oil. Fuel filter has 3000 miles on it and I run additive a lot. Black smoke = plenty of fuel right?
Your probably right. I talked to a mechanic today and he said the new injectors for the CR don't tolerate the increase in fuel amount as well. Lots of injectors blowing out due to increased fuel pressure. They are probably the weak link in the fuel system like the vp44 was in the 24v's. A trip to the dealer to check injectors looks to be in your future.
I thought the Superchips made horsepower on pretty much just timing? I remember reading somewhere that the Superchips fuel pressure readings were close to stock pressures, thats the reason I went that route.
When I had the superchip on my truck @ the performance level. It smoked alot when on the pedal. It went away when my turbo boost caught up. Nothing wrong. You may have to update the Flashpaq on their website. I get no smoke w/ my Edge on now unless I put it on level 5x5. The Superchip will not mess w/ your rail pressure.

Please excuse the stupid questions, but this is my first diesel truck...would a bad injector make the truck smoke at all at idle? Exhaust smell any different...mine just stinks like Rotella! LOL Also, would higher ambient air temps give me any more black smoke? Could my slightly rough idle be due to the inbetweener in air temps....meaning that its warm enough here in the mornings for the wait to start heater grid light to not come on, but still cool? If I do have a leaking injector, and cannot get to a dealer for a couple weeks, is it going to kill my truck?
So far my '06 with 3050 miles has had injectors #2,3,5 replaced..#2 was the latest and it finally thru a code p0302 which is misfire in #2...Dealer has been decent with repairs. Only symptom I have had is rough idle at start-up.
When they replaced #3 & 5 I had it towed because it would barely run and was blowing alot of white smoke at idle. But never thru a CEL.

I have no smoke idleing what-so-ever. And it fires right off at the turn of the key. Just down in power slightly and more black smoke when heavy on the go pedal. Maybe I'm just over worried about my truck. Between reading this forum and staring at the guages, maybe I have finally went over the edge!
Don't feel bad Mega. I posted a very similar thread a while back. Turns out the oil was just slightly overfilled when it was changed.
All the reading of injectors going out makes you feel like it's just a matter of time until it's your turn. I might go with a set of Flux 1's just to get away from the terrible stock injectors and put my mind at ease.

The dealer just replaced all 6 injectors on my 2005 CTD this week. I had rough idle and one was leaking down overnight causing a lot of white smoke at startup. The oil level wasn't affected though. Pretty good warranty coverage I'd say.
