I did read it carefully. These two statements weren't accurate...

"Every CTD has an APPS"
"The early 3rd gens were mounted under the hood like the older trucks ( 1st and 2nd gens) and the later 3rd gens are under the dash."

1st gens didn't have one, but they did still have a computer of sorts. That's all I was getting at.

Here is a pic of the grid heater and a replacement.

And the 06 at least has the TPS on the pedal under the dash. "drive by wire", kind of scary.

Id leave it, youll have some hard starting in the winter(might not be as bad if you plug your truck in though) still wont be smooth sailing while the engine is cold in cold weather...

You could pull it for a spacer during the summer months, but youd need gaskets each time you swap it back, etc.

I probably dont need mine here in Texas, but ill leave it be till I need to worry about squeezing a few more horses out of it...(not anytime soon)

I have 2 true 04 models and one has the APPS under the hood and the other doesn't! I thought it was an Auto - Manual thing.

I thought the Auto had it under the hood and the Manual tranny didn't.

This thought was solely based on the 2 trucks I have and how I deduced what the difference was; its not based on anything I've read or even heard.

Only when its below frezzzzeing. I know several persons who have removed the grid and never have a problem. Besides it takes about 10-15 mins to change....4 bolts. so you could run it in the winter if it gets cold enough and then take it out in the spring.

And 9 times out of ten the gaskets stay in place and are reuseable. Or buy the copper ones and never worry about it again.

Why wait until winter, and once you discover it is a breeze to change i would disconnect the solinoids near the battery and not worry about the wires. It really cleans up your engine.
