Anyone had the front CV joint apart yet?

I had to replace one of the u-joints in the CV joint for the front axle driveshaft. One of the caps was broken and there was not a needle bearing to be found. Anyways, when you pull it all apart there is a shaft with a spring on the end that goes into a semi-hemispherical knuckle. It seems like that knuckle should have had a ball bearing in it that the spring mates onto. There was no ball bearing at all and no trace of one ever being there. I'm just wondering if there is supposed to be one there.....

Of course the CD shop manual makes no mention of this CV joint......

CV joint on a 4x4?

Learn something new everyday. Does it still have a differential?

Double Cardan is often referred to as a CV joint.

Yes, there should be a ball inside that semi hemispherical knuckle thing.
(I think?)

Well, there weren't one there and there still isn't one!!

Is it OK to drive one of these trucks without the front driveshaft in? If it's supposed to have that ball in there then I will want to get it right. Everything seems OK so far. Tested out the Anti-defueler a couple times and even drove around a bit in 4x4 to see if it was OK and it Seems like everything is right.

Anyone know for sure?????
