My 05' did the same thing at 20,00 miles. Ate the first two ribs off. Took it to the shop and they discovered the power steering pulley was actually sliding out nearly a full inch after engine warmed up. Service manager checked his new personal p/u and it was doing the same thing. he changed his too. have not had a problem since

My 05 did the same thing. First two ribs, except mine came apart. The two ribs worth of belt that separated that is. It had wrapped itself around the fan clutch. When I saw it I remembered a strange sound coming from under the hood. Sounded like a supercharger whine. After about 10 minutes on the hwy the sound went away. I guess thats when the belt went. The rest of the belt stayed put but I didnt notice it for several weeks. When I found it I cut it off and took the truck to the dealer (was headed there for maintenance anyway). I think I paid for the new belt (37-38K miles IIRC). Almost 67K miles now and no issues at all. Go figure....

At the time I was trying for the "800 mile club" and was probably driving the truck unsatisfactorily. Short shifting (2nd, 4th, 6th), shifting at 1600-1800 rpm, driving down city streets at 30-35 mph in 6th. I chalked it up to the truck letting me know that it didnt like being driven that way. I dont do that anymore. Oh, and I did make the "800 mile club" with 831.9 miles.

Well I spoke WAY to soon. Went to pull out this evening and mine did it for a second time. Lost first two ribs on the belt. First time was about 15,000 miles, this one lasted over 40,000 and thought problem was fixed!.....WRONG!!!
Will not pay for the belt on this one as it was replaced by dealer last time this happened and have extended 100,00 mile warranty on everything. I know the belt is considered a "wearable part" but not twice in 60,000 miles. If they give me flak I will calmly say "fine", I'll never buy another truck from you again. Conidering this dealership has made well over $100K off my family buying vhicles from them and I hunt with the assistant general manager I'm sure problem will fixed(if only temporarily) free of charge!

I would just like to know what actually causes the problem! I will suggest the tensioner this time when I take it in.

Correction needed here, mine was the alternator pulley.

I'll see your two ribs and raise you 1/2 belt in 3K miles..Here we go..at 24 K I shredded the 1st belt, The dealer installed under warranty a new belt with the over-running alt pulley, there was a visible wear pattern on the tensioner pulley..dealer would not replace it as it was not broke.. 3K miles later on a road trip to Phoenix for Christmas it ate 1/2 of the new belt...The No Bull dealer in Phoenix would not fix it on warranty..he said there was nothing wrong with the truck and the belt must have been installed wrong..so it's $150 to get your truck out of the door...Still under 3yr-36k (plus i have the maximum care warranty to boot) he said I would have to take it up with Dodge..have not had time to do so...oh yeah and the newest of the belts is starting to show signs of wear with less than 1K on it..yeah you just gotta love the dodge boys as they no how to put "CUS" in customer service!

Well I will say my dealership replaced my pulley the first time free of charge. They will do the same this time, whether they know it or not! Where my dealer is screwed is my truck is already had this problem fixed under warranty and it is on record with them and ME(in the glovebox).
I'm not so worried about them giving me flak as I am just finding out a final solution to the problem.
If I'm on a trip changing the belt is no big deal, just an inconvenience. I'm a decent novice mechanic growing up on a ranch (you don't run every truck, tractor, dozer to the dealership every time it burps).
But I shoudn't have to is the point.

The problem is the truck is not safe to drive and they don't want to fix it..And yes I know how to change a belt, I carry a spare one.. I just don't think it should be done every 3K miles, which by BTW is documented on Dodges service dept. computer.. Oh yeah and I've been a mechanic for 30yrs+ I work on engines that cost more than my truck...

That dealer filled you full of BS! If your truck was under the 3yr/36,000 then in dont matter what dealer installed it. If it broke, any dealer you go to is obligated to honor the warranty and replace it! A really good dealer would not only replace the belt but find the problem! If its eating them every 3,000 miles the problem shouldnt be that hard to find you would think? Mine is eating them about every 35,000 miles it seems. This sucks big time!

You are correct but when your truck is being held for ransom you pay it..yes I intend to take it up with Dodge and now that I am back home I can take the truck to the dealer I bought it from(and sent an additional 18 trucks sales too) and we will get to the bottom of this. My concern is that there are many complaints of warranty work on this site from dealers all over the country. The overrunning alternator pulley should have a recall associated with it but Dodge would rather set back and wait for your warranty to expire, then charge you to do it. I have seen belts break and take out fan clutches, if your in rush hr traffic you certainly don't want to loose a belt and if you live in remote areas with no cell phone signal it can be a safety issue as well..The funny part of the whole deal with the last dealer is I was actually working a deal on a 5500 Quadcab 4x4 50k +/- after I got shafted I went to the sales dept and told the fleet truck sales manager that I was not going to invest 50k in another truck that they would not stand behind..so they may have made $100 in repairs but they lost a 50K truck sale

Now that you mention it...

Today at 56K, my original Mopar belt gave up the ghost. The forward rib separated from the belt and wrapped around the fan hub. The remainder of the belt moved forward one pulley groove on the PX side and was in the normal grooves on the drivers side. I took the belt off and examined everything . All I could find is the PS pulley has 3/16"-1/4" of pulley shaft movement on it longitudinal axis. It is other wise solid, not wobbling or loose.

I took a look at the manual and here are the troubles/fixes.
RIB OR BELT WEAR
1. Pulley misaligned 1. Align pulley(s)
2. Abrasive environment 2. Clean pulley(s). Replace belt if necessary
3. Rusted pulley(s) 3. Clean rust from pulley(s)
4. Sharp or jagged pulley groove tips. 4. Replace pulley. Inspect belt.
5. Belt rubber deteriorated 5. Replace belt

GROOVE JUMPING (Belt does not maintain correct position on pulley)
1. Incorrect belt tension 1. Inspect/Replace tensioner if necessary
2. Pulley(s) not within design tolerance 2. Replace pulley(s)
3. Foreign object(s) in grooves 3. Remove foreign objects from grooves
4. Pulley misalignment 4. Align component
5. Belt cordline is broken 5. Replace belt

The tensioner seems to be okay. It returns all the way to the stop with no belt. I've about made my mind up to stick a new belt on and see what happens and call it a routine failure. But at $67 a pop, I'd like to know that the movement of the PS pulley is not the cause of the problem. Is that pulley shaft supposed to run in and out??

Anything you guys can tell me to save a belt will be appreciated!!

BTW, the busted belt shows no signs of wear other than the missing rib.

No, but I read the previous post and my truck does chirp when shut off. Since it was off the grooves on the Alt side, I am inclined to believe thats where the problem lies.

I bought second owner the 100K drive train. Just after I bought the truck, I researched the chirp and found the TSB you mentioned. I went to the local Dodge dealer and the SM told me "they all do that" and there is no solution. Since I didn't know and he couldn't tell me if it warranty, I let it go. He said they do the repairs and put it in the computer and DC may or may not cover it.
