Another Towing and EGT Temp Question
Another Towing and EGT Temp Question
Can anyone tell me at what temp the truck will de-fuel? I tow a 11k 5th wheel with the truck in sig below. Total combined weight is about 20K. The truck is basically stock. I'll see about 1300 - 1400* when I climb the last hill to my house. It's about a 5% grade about 1/2 mile or so. Is it OK to hit those temps for a short period? I try to back out of the throttle and down shift into 2nd gear but the temps still climb. Thanks in advance for your help.
The engine computer will not defuel the stock engine as its not suppose to hurt anything in the stock mode. ??
If I were doing the same hill I would probably be around 1200-1250 at 65mph. (2000rpm) Thats with the Juice/Attitude on Tow with Cruise Control on. The Juice will defuel at the preset EGT, for me 1350 degrees.
Prior to changing the rear, and putting the Juice back in, on cruise, my truck would down shift into third before I got to the top of the hil at 65. That drives up EGT's quick.
If you tow alot, the 4.10 is the way to go. Lost about 1/2 to 1 mile per gallon, but do 1-1.5mpg better towing. Engine load is down as are the EGT's.
Don't know how fast you tow, but if you run 1900-2000 rpm with the 3.73's you should make that hill without a downshift or hi egt's. Cummins says when setting up for towing, you should do not less than 2100 rpm for the speed you run at. In may case 65 to 70. 70 is 2100. Thats as close as I can get
since a 4.30 gear is not avaiable and 4.56 is two much to drag around not towing. Towing all the time it would be perfect.

My problem is I wish I could get a run at the hill. I have to take a turn off the main road from the traffic light and up a small incline. Just as I get up to about 25 - 30 mph, I have to back out of the go pedal to take a sharp turn and that's when the big grade starts. I've tried to manually downshift into 1st gear and get the revs up to 2500-2800 rpms @ 30 mph. That's when the egts start to spike. When I shift in to 2nd the egts will come down some but I still have to back off to keep the temps down and then I lose my momentum.
I've tried both manually shifting to 1st and 2nd gear with the OD off. I'm just trying to get up to and maintain 25/30 mph without getting over 1400* and damaging anything. Water temp will only climb to 210* and trans temp will get to 170/180* by the time I get to the top of the hill and cool right off again. The truck runs great and pulls just fine. I just wanted to be sure I wasn't going to damage anything if I spike the egt's. I climb this hill at least twice a month during camping season.

I've always heard a stock engine with load would do 1400 + ,I found it hard to believe but you have just put another nail in the egt saga,on our trip next week I wiill worry less and lift less becuse 1400 is a cinch towing the 5ver and bike.
Just an idea but what about shifting to 4x4 Low. You need to keep below 25 mph. As long as the hill is a straight shot it would be a lot better on the tranny and engine.
I use 4x4 low pulling the boat (#6000 lbs+) out of the water, I don't even need to touch the pedal. I just turn 4x4 off before I need to turn.
I didn't see it specifically mentioned in any other posts, if it was disregard.

I have an '03 dually auto with Edge Attitude chip and tow a 14K 5er. I was told by a Cummins Rep that I should stay under 1300 but can do short burst up to 1500. Long runs at 1500+ will cook the seals in the turbo he said. I've pulled some long grades (11 miles at 10% and lesser grades) I shift out of OD at 52 mph. For you with the low speed turns the best thing you can do is drop it into 3rd and back off the throttle to keep EGT lower. In some cases helping the engine and trans is better than speed. Believe me, I wish I could top every hill or mountain at 70 but that won't happen unless I get several more gears. I have a 3:73 rear ratio as I run solo more than tow. I like my 18 to 18.5 mpg especially with the cost of diesel these days.
