alternative fuel
alternative fuel
has anyone tried running the engine on transmission fluid? I know a guy that has a jeep with a 4 cylinder cummings and has run straight tranny fluid in it. he said it smokes a little more, but fuel economy and power is the same. he gets 30 mpg with this setup.
I wouldnt see the point. Some have added it to increase lubricity. There is some debate about it. But straight Tranny fluid? USED tranny fluid on the other hand, would be different, cause its FREE. But i wouldnt.
1. its thicker than diesel, ie harder starting when cold, more smoke
2. its made NOT to burn. more smoke, cant let it idle for long.
3. it has metal particles suspended. Iron and steel would be tolerable, if you let it sit for days/weeks with magnets at the bottom. But what about aluminum and brass? It will take its toll on the Fuel pumps, cylinder walls, engine oil, etc
So its a trade off. Will you save more money running on it, instead of diesel, and then subracting the expense of an engine rebuild and new High pressure pump? It could be next month, or ten years away.
up to you.
BTW. i run on veggie oil, pure. It doesnt have the problems #2 or 3 listed above. and i start up on diesel, till the engines hot, and heat the fuel. So that takes care of #1.

I know you can make serious power out of that type of stuff but would not advise it.
The reason I know this is because of a cat dozer one time where a young helper poured a 5 gallon pail of hydraulic fluid into the fuel tank by mistake.
That dozer gained about 3 D sizes right now but the engine couldnt handle the extra heat and was toast after about 2 hours.
Expensive fuel indeed!
