600 MPG Vote
This may have been done but I have not found it. How about voting to see where 600 highway MPG is at? Highway miles should provide an average of where we could expect the city MPG and combined MPG to be at. As Gord points out I should have had HIGHWAY in the vote topic, but only moderator can fix that.
I am right at the edge of buying an 04.5 600 and my feet are stuck!
Thanks

My guess would be if the 600's are getting anything less than the 18-19 average for most all other diesels out there getting (I've been keeping an eye on chivy and furd sites too) your not going to get a lot of confessions. actually the furds ARE getting a little less, most seem to be giving numbers like 16-18.
It all really boils down to how you drive it! if I baby mine really bad I can get it up to 21-22 in town, but it drives me crazy doing it.
With the "Diesel Power Wars" going on NOBODY is going to drop power numbers in order to meet emmisions, otherwise you'd see exactly what happened to the gasers in the 70s... A 190 hp Corvette!!!
So the mileage HAD to be where the sacrifice was made.

loss of power
Hi All.
I dont belive there needs to be power sacrifice for emision controll, have a look at new Sprinter van (Mercedes) for example and that is not most efficient van this size on the world market, they have 2.7 l, I-5 cylinder with power output of ~155 hp, we have 5.9 l with 325 it seems to be right in line, fuel milage is also about 22-28 mpg, there are ways to compromise emisions and power by adding more technology like adjustable turbo, better injection control etc.
We can hawe the cake and eat it too. We invest big $$$ in those trucks.
Just my .02c.
Jack.

Maybe the people that vote should reply as well and include their type of truck. I am curious what truck is getting 18+. I have a 2004.5 QC, DRW, 6 spd, 3.73 and I have 3900 miles just put 2000 on driving to Georgia and back and my best was barely over 14. I shift at 1500 and set the cruise at 70. My worst was 12.3. I know these will never get as good as the 2wds, shortbeds ,etc, but the reason I bought this truck, other than it can pull like no other, was so I could get better than 15 mpg empty and 10 loaded from my 02 chevy HD 6.0L. I have got a few buddies with similar set ups the only difference being the motor, 305 Ho, that get 18 empty and 15 loaded. Anyway still love the truck, just

What is your average highway speed?
My dad has been getting right aroudn 15-16, mostly short trips (10 miles) to town, though. This is also on winter fuel, so I bet highway he will be getting around 19. The truck has 1300 miles on it.
I just towed about 2500 miles with my 04. The load was fairly light, about 4500 lbs. I kept my speed at 60 to 65. Rolling on the flats, speed at 60, RPM at 1700, in OD, I got 19 mpg. In the rolling hills, out of OD, speed at 60, RPM 2300, I ran between 13 and 16 mpg. Unloaded around town, I am getting 16 to 17. I now have 3500 miles on it. Obviously, I am very light footed!
sounds familar...............
All this fuel mileage talk sounds very familar. I remember when the 2003 models were out many people were complaining about mileage. For some reason all the complaints seemed to cease. Maybe it was because of winter grade fuel or the trucks were not broken in.
I just hope my 600 that is on order gets better mileage than what is appearing on the above poll.

papaperk good point
Does anyone that owns 03, 04 with 20+k remember what kind of milage were they getting at the beginning and what was overtime improvement.
From my own experience milage stayed same from beginning till trade in.
Regards Jack.

I just bought mine a week ago. 04.5 600 Auto LWB 4x2.
15.4 MPG by hand, 14.3 on the overhead. 520 miles - 50/50 hwy/city.
The MPG is improving steadily, the truck is a DREAM on the highway.
I'm happy as hell. This truly is a REALLY nice truck.

I've got an '04 and with 8400 miles, I got 545 miles out of 25 gallons (21.8mpg). That's the best milage to date, and I was shocked! The tank before this one, I got just over 20 mpg. Most of the driving is highway at around 70-75 mph, with no load. Off the dealer lot with only 10 miles on the odometer, I was getting 17 mpg. It just keeps getting better and better!
