600 or 555
There are still a lot of 555's on the lots here in Texas. Problem is these dealers only want to give you about 28,500.00 for a 41,000.00 msrp truck with only 5000mi. I think Dodge should pick up the slack because I want to stay with their product...just not the "600 diesel wasting version" that they snuck in on us.
555. I had a hunch the 600 would be a little less fuel efficient and wanted to wait out the new EGR introduction. I'll buy a 600 or iteration in 2006, so I'll be probably living with poorer mileage then. In the meantime, the 555 is terrific. Let'r Buck!
I love the 600 I bought, and don't have second thoughts about buying the previous model. I ordered mine just the way I wanted it! I will say the pinging had me worried at first, but now I know what it is, I'm accepting it as normal. Pulling a heavy load has helped my mileage, which is still getting better. I have a 7500# TT and out of the 3,600 miles I have on the clock, at least 1,500 of them are towing it. I didn't even start looking at mileage closely until the last 3 tanks. So far, I have not made any empty runs out of town that would net the highest mileage I will see, but I am getting almost 16 around town now, and that is driving 70-80 whenever I can on the freeways. The last 2 tanks have been 15.4 MPG and 15.8 MPG all in town. I'm not worried, because I know I can get better MPG right now if I wanted to slow down - but I don't drive like that. To those stuck on low mileage I would suggest (if you haven't already) towing something heavy, towing it several times for several hundred miles. Work it hard, get it hot, start breaking it in well, before blaming the motor. After all, what did we buy a locomotive for? If Cummins or DC comes out with some kind of reflash or TSB that addresses mileage issues, I will get mine too, but I'm not second guessing myself or wishing I had bought something else. If there are any owners with legitimate problems, it is my hope they are able to get them worked out and be happy with their trucks. -v12xke
600 PROBLEMS
Hi All.
V12XKE, I think there is considerable number legit problems with the new 600, because of the number of complaints from new owners, they have been on the market for about 5 months so miles are adding up.
Problems that I have amonght's other owners are:
- low fuel economy, not terrible but should I know about it before hand my decision would be different.
- clatter on acceleration
- knocking on one cylinder
- vibration at 60 - 70
- rear end whine at 15 - 20
I do run my own business, if i would build and install equipment that is unofficient, not working correctly and it needs down time to be repaired that would be my last job for this customer since alot of money can be made in one hour, I use my truck to run this business, every day at the dealers cost me $ and down time, I heave replaced my 2001 just to avoid the problems I am heaving, also we pay good money to have them Q.C. at the factory and not on us.
This experience will definetely afect my next truck buing decision, I can apprecieate that everything is not perfect, but thats seems to be little much, in this situation in my own business I would replace entire system to keep customer happy and producing even though it would cost me alot of $, DC should do same.
That is my opinion.
Regards Jack.

No problems here so far and I love my 600. 1700 miles. 15-16 fuel mileage which I'm happy with. I barely notice the pinging/clatter. No injector knock, no vibrations, no rear end whine. Of course, 1700 miles isn't that much and these other issues could certainly come up later. Now, don't get me wrong, I know some people do have some problems like those stated (except ping/clatter which is not a problem), and I hope they can get them resolved, but all told, compared to the competition (Ford), the 600 is fantastic. Check out www.thedieselstop.com and see if that has any affect on your next truck purchase.
I love the tri 5 it is a year and 2 months and 14 days 8 hrs and 32 min and 5 seconds old, I was wondering last fall when I saw the 600 come out I thought hell I can and have got that torque and hp already. Best rig I have ever owned. No vibes no leaks no problems great investment for the long Hauuual.
