Re:6 speed shifting

It's a big tranny. Mine is also a little difficult. I still fish around for a gear now and again. 14K miles so far and it's about the same as it was new.

Re:6 speed shifting

My transmission shifted better after a few thousand miles. Or maybe I just got better at it. Whatever........it is better. Put a few miles on it.

Re:6 speed shifting

Your tranny should loosen up after a few thousand miles. It's amazing how much better mine shift now compared to when I picked it up. Also, I plan on switching to Redline MTL, which should smooth things up a bit.

Re:6 speed shifting

ditto that. My 02 loosened up gradually and I didn't even notice that by 20,000 miles it shifted very smoothly with only a few times where the syncros held things up.

When I got my 04 I thought wow this thing is tight.

Re:6 speed shifting

I complained a little about the slow shifting when I first got the truck. I slowed down my shift a little, the shift has loosened just a little and I am more used to it. I hardly think about it any more. Just drive it and enjoy it.

Re:6 speed shifting

this is my first 6speed..i agree that it is a bit tricky to shift..you cant hurry the process especially on down shifts..not sure if its syncros or shifter..but as long as i drive it like a truck not my mercedes, its fine..i am toying with the idea of trying a bd short shifter at some point out of curiosity..so far no real problems with my truck...

Re:6 speed shifting

With every manual transmission I have ever driven enough to "know" like the back of my hand there has always been a sweet spot. It's a shift timing thing leaving one gear at a certain RPM makes it easier to get into the next. Gears closer together in ratio seem to go easier.

Re:6 speed shifting

I don't know if the 6 sp is different, but from what I've found out so far the 5sp shifts easily when reving to a bit over 2000 rpm on level ground and trying to catch the shift at about 1500 rpm or a bit less. When going downhill lower revs work ok and when going uphill more revs are needed. The shifts require very little effort when keeping the revs in this range. Outside the range it might shift ok, but often it requires more effort and sometimes won't even go into gear.

Re:6 speed shifting

My 6 is a little Clunky to shift but then it only has 600 or so miles on it.

I have read that putting on some miles and a fluid change will help.

Are any of you 6 speed drivers using 2,4,6 only?
Mine seems to shift pretty good while driving unloaded.

Re:6 speed shifting

I also noticed that it was a little tight at first and it is loosening as time passes.

Re:6 speed shifting

With the ones I've owned, both 5 & 6 speeds, they seem to shift alot better with more throttle applied! The higher the rpm the quicker and smoother the shift. Of course they do loosen up some with time. Plus I never changed the fluid.
