4X4 Shift on the Fy
4X4 Shift on the Fy
I don't normally shift on the fly, but today I did. Just came off the interstate & their was fair amount of snow & ice. I was doing about 15 mph & pulled it into 4-Hi. I could hear gears grinding & immidiatly backed off. Came to a stop & put in 4-Hi. It was cold out - about 7F, but the truck was full warmed up.
Why did my truck do this? Because of the cold?

from what i understand you are supposed to **** 4 wheel high while moving just not passed speeds of 50mph you are supposed to let off the accel. firmly shift into 4wheel high. now for 4 low is a diff story you are supposed to put it in gear start moving do not exceed 5 mph put it in N firmly shift into 4low do not pause in N, one movement from 2w to 4lo, then put back into drive and you are in 4 low some ginding is normal but excessive should be concerning! i dont understand how you can stop the vehicle and put it in 4wd mine will not let me at all

Wheels spinning?
Mark, I usually always shift on the fly from 2H to 4H, from just rolling along to flying down the highway. My transfer case is tough to shift when stopped. I've never gotten a grind out of it unless I was having a brainfart and babying the lever into 4H, or trying to push it into 2L when I was moving to fast.

i shift mine in and out of 4 hi all the time at varrying speeds, the only time that it will make noise is if I do it while one or more tires are spinning, or I am in a corner situtation

That's interesting about the difficulty of shifting into 4 high while stopped; mine has no problems or grinding either while stopped or rolling, but I've never tried to shift into 4wd while going any faster than about 20mph.
iv shifted meny times in and out of 4high at all speeds, from standing still, all the way up to 70 mph with no prob. might have just been one of thows things that it just wanted to grind. bet it dont hapen again.
Yup, the front axle is going at a lower speed than the rear axle so when you try to lock the two together the speeds don't match and it grinds, same thing for when you are spinning the rear wheels but not nearly as bad.
