3.73's and 315's
ANyone towing with 3.73's and 315's ? Ive a 7500lb boat and want to know if it is feasable to tow my rig with this size tire. I will be towing up hill on the way home, although only about a mile.
Any suggestions on hitch drop size?
Aloha,
Mike

Howdy, I tow with 3.73 ratio but with 265 tires, this works well for me. I would think going bigger would cause a bit more shift down earlier on hills, if you shift, it would be interesting to see on the same rig and load what the change would be.

I do it all the time. You will notice a difference if you have towed much in stock form, but it's not horrid. I have to drop out of 6th a little sooner than when it was stock, but once it's down in 1:1, there are no problems maintaining the legal speeds. I towed from Washington state to Denver and back this summer, just a touch over 22k total rolling weight, and managed roughly 13.5mpg average and was able to pass a lot of traffic, even pulling Vail Pass. So, I'd certainly say it's a reasonable setup!!
As for the hitch drop, I built an adjustable unit, but it's set at about 5" of drop for my flatbed Jeep hauler trailer, and about 7" of drop for my camp trailer. The gooseneck was built for a 4x4, so there was plenty of adjustment in the snout for the added height. If you plan on buying a fiver, I would recommend talking with the mfg about the height of your rig first, before you get sold on a certain brand or layout... For bumper pulls, the rule of thumb is that when hitched and loaded, the "normal" trailer ball is roughly 20" from the ground to the top of the ball.

Cool,
Thanks for the replies...looks like I will make the jump to the bigger tires..tirerack.com has a special on them now for 117.00. Will be about 676.00 to my door. Looks like Ill wai until the truck gets here to make measurements on both truck and trailer before purchasing the hitch.
Toby, did you have to install the leveling kit to prevent rubbing? Looks like our trucks will be quite similiar!
ALoha,
Mike

Mike - I actually installed my leveling kit the night before my tires arrived, so I don't know if my particular truck would have rubbed or not. Some do, some don't, it's all about the tolerances. At any rate, you've got great taste
