2nd Gen Diffs in a 3rd Gen ?

Hi folks, Im thinking of buying a friend of mines 05' CTD this weekend.
I have owned two Gen2's sinse 02' & love these trucks !

Quick question for you guys.

1: Will my Dana 70 rear & 60 front from my wrecked 02' bolt into the 3rd Gen ?
Reason I ask is 410's in the 02' Diffs & 373 in the 05.
Also I have less miles & Mag Hi Tech covers on both of them also.
Plus I feel the 60 is stronger than the 9.5 too.

New to this 3rd Gen stuff !

Thanks in advance---Proflow

I do not know for sure but I do not think they will bolt right up. The 2d gen is Dana and 3d gen is American Axel. The frame is also completly different, they changed to a box frame in '03

Yeh, I wish I had the truck here to do some measuring. I know the Dana Diffs like the back of my hand, but dont know squat about the American Axel stuff. Id really like to have the 410's for towing. Someone has to have busted a 9.5 American Axle & looked into this by now though. Just curiouse.

i would consider 410s or is it 411?

456 teeth become to thin and if you get on it MIGHT strip the ring.

37" open country tires & tow a 17k lb. 5er
If I go 410's, I'd like to swap someone local that wants 373's for economy.
Otherwise a high strengh ring & pinion.

with 37s or 40s 3.xx would suck.

with 456 and those tires and towing i wouldn't want the toque of the engine to rip up the ring or pinon.

for sure look into 410s

Good point, isnt it that the 456 loses one pinion tooth over the 410 ?

i was thinking I might be alright if I went w/a high quality gear like Richman or whatnot. Not standard strengh stock stuff ya know.

I don't know the in's and out but when I had my rear diff open and compared to my 3.xx to the 456s from the 1500 I had the over all teeth were thinner. Of course the rings are of different size.

As a side note I haven't seen any baja trucks with 456s.

Ive seen some 456s ripped up on our trucks and it wasn't pretty stuck in its track.

Guy on another forum just put 410s in with 37s and it was a better feel in the dirt and trolling around.

My trucks have mostly been pavement pounders. Pretty much daily drivers.
I did find the 410's to be right in the torque zone w/the 37's. However I was thinking if i were to go to the expense & labor of swapping the gears I would give her a tad more gear for stronger pulling power.
I know this comes from my old gasser days, but its hard to think Diesel some times !!!

410s and a built up tranny would do the trick in my book.
Might be the same price if you kill a set of 456s

True that, this truck I'm thinking of buying has a fresh built trans. About 8k invested in it. Thats a good start.
Wish the diffs were 410's.
