I am looking for someone with some knowledge on American axle diffs. I have an 06 1 ton srw I want to convert to real drw ( no spacers) I heard the axles are the same and then I heard they were not. Can I put drw hubs and axle shafts in my rear or do I have to change the rear. I am leaving the bed on it and I am going to put mega cab drw fenders on it. Any one have any info, Thanks

 

The 3rd Gen SRW and DRW rear axles are different widths. You will have to swap rear axles to complete this swap.

It is a common swap and many guys have even gone from DRW to SRW over the years.

The 4th Gen DRW axles are stronger. Finding a used newer 4th Gen DRW axle to swap into your 2006 truck would be recommended.

 

My buddy was actively shopping for an AAM1150 diff for a while and dug up the detail that the axle tubes are thicker on a DRW.

Based on historical Dodge SRW vs DRW data... and my own experiences with swapping newer wheels onto older trucks... DRW pickup is a wider housing overall, and uses DRW-specific hubs/brakes. Swapping to DRW hubs typically narrows the overall track width and leaves you in a pickle requiring custom brakes.

What you may be able to do is fit 19.5" or 20" DRW wheels directly on the SRW axle.

 

thanks for the info, is the 4th gen diff a direct swap into my 06 ,(spring perch width - drive shaft ect.)

 

seeing i have to swap out the diff to make it drw , does anyone out there know of a good drw 373 diff for sale , I am in ct. and my truck has 119k on it , would like some thing around that mileage , my truck is in very good shape , I only use it to tow a 30´ race car trailer. It would be nice to find something in good shape to put into it. thanks,
