It can be done, and will be done... it,s just a matter who's going to make the dough when they come up with the solution. all you have to do is read this forum and you'll see plenty of complaints

This is the quote from Dodge on the Tow Haul feature:

A "Tow/Haul" feature that provides crisper shifts and reduces gear searching when towing. The system will select a lower gear in downhill conditions to best utilize the engine's braking capability.
Crisper shifts = more line pressure

reduce gear searching = modified shift points

Thank-you BigDav I understand what your saying but that's not exactly the point. even a 99 GmC I own when in tow haul does not allow the trans to go into o/d. the feature works good as long as as long as your on a consistent grade either up or down ,but when towing to the coast or even better up from the coast when your pulling up then down h and don't forget the 20mph turns...It ***** I finally just gave up on fuel economy and left it in 2nd gear and saved the brakes.Heck what good would an eng. brake do if all the trans wants to do is shift to o/d. Pulling uphill is only half the battle :and that's no problem at all..

It looks like its possible to do the same thing as the lockup, only in reverse. In this case we want to take the OD solenoid out of the circuit so it doesnt engage when commanded but still provide the line continuity the ECU needs to see so it doesn't get upset. The same 33 ohm resistor tapped into a power supply and routed back to the ECU via a switch should do the trick.

Guess its testing time.

Has anyone found a solution to this nightmare on 2005s?

The "smart" logic works good if you double tap the tow/haul to get it into third AND then have enough trailer behind you (or lack of power) to pull up the hill w/o problems. I have big tires and no trailer, and the truck works great in third up a hill, and horible when it goes into OD, but there is no way for me to keep it out of OD unless I either turn all the power adders off, or keep my foot burried heavy enough to prevent it from going into OD while sometimes speeding up too much.

Really hope someone finds a solution to this nightmare, been waiting long enough.

Well your not going to get a fix I dont think. As I previously stated I backed off from buying a 05 for this reason. I was in the market in the winter of 04-05. All the dealers in my area argued with me on the fact you couldnt lock out 4th. And they did act dumb about it , first saying you could lock it out, then when I showed them you couldnt, they tryed to tell me the trans was so smart it would always be in the right gear at all times. HAHA What a joke. They obiously didnt know there product, and dont have a clue as what needed for a good tow truck.
Dodge reallized there folly and made the correction for 06. At which point I bought a new 06 3500 in Nov 06
Now this 48re for 06 is the best auto dodge has put out to date. Works well with the 4th lockout and tow haul. Love the truck.Hopefully the new 6 speed auto comeing will function as good or better. No reason why dodge couldnt fix the 05s but I dont see it hapening.
Dont feel to bad ,the first Great Allisons in the GM had no overdrive lockout eather . Gm fixed that in 03. And your lucky you got the cummins in your 05 because you should try pulling 12000 with a 02 Chev with a 3.73 gear, 8100 gasser, with the 5 speed allison that you cant lockout overdrive on. But that allison has come a long way for 06 . Dodge better have a good 6 speed auto comeing!!!

We are just about ready to release our 2005 O/D lockout kit. It is going to be a wire in module. You will just double click your od button to lockout od. We should have it in about two weeks. The kit should sell for right around $225. I will try to post here when we are shipping. You can also keep an eye on our site for more release information.

Sounds great!

Can you tell us about what kind of testing has been done to show that it doesn't cause any problems with the transmission or transmission control module?

Any idea if this is something the dealer can trace? (assuming the module is removed prior to visits to the dealer)

Wow, I really feel for you '05 owners. I've never seen an automatic equipped car or truck that didn't offer an OD lockout feature!

The addition of OD lockout in '06 wasn't perfect either. They used the same button for T/H and OD lockout and you can't use the OD lockout while using T/H mode! To me this makes no sense. Why would you want to use T/H mode and NEVER lockout OD?? The two would usually be used together!
