03 backfires

My 03 started acting up. It has 46000 miles. I was pulling a trailer and all of a sudden it was as if the ignition was turned off then back on and BANG with flames out the exhaust. I slowed down and it sounds normal not rough or missing. Then it happened three more times in the next twenty miles.

Check your oil seals on the Turbo. Are they leaking oil into the exhaust side which is igniting every so often?

Usually when an electronic diesel engine backfires..It has something to do with a timing sensor. Were there any codes? I am a CAT mechanic... so this is just general info. I will be buyin myself a manual so I can be Cummins edumicated.

Just hook up a propane bottle to the exhaust and add a spark plug at the tip! Ohh wait, you are trying to get rid of the flames and pops...Can't help you there!
