is this worth it?

I have a friend with a 1996 2500 4x4 5spd extended cab. The truck has 76,000 miles on it.....in showroom condition. He has installed a gooseneck hitch (B&W), bought a grilleguard and winch, completely coated the underside of the truck (no rust whatsoever....a southern truck), installed Isspro gauges, a plate, a gsk, installed a $900 South bend clutch, installed a full 4'' exhaust, and put step bars on the truck. He also repaired a dent on the rear quarter panel that existed when he bought the truck. The truck was owned by a lady in georgia who NEVER hooked a trailer to it. My friend bought the truck 5 months ago with 74,000 miles on it. He has always wanted a 3rd gen however....and has an oppurtunity to get one. He wants to sell the 96 to me.....price being between 15k and 17k...unsure just yet. Is this in any way reasonable....or should I just let him put the truck on the market. TRUCK IS COMPLETELY SHOWROOM. Thanks for any input. redwake.

That sounds like a nice 12 valve. However at 12 years old its still 12 years old. The price sounds a little high but it has got a lot of mods that you won't have to do. And its a club cab. I'd consider it if I had the dough. My 01 only has 74K on it so its pretty low in the mileage dept. also, that 96 doesn't have the vp44 pump! Yeah, I'd seriously consider it. Kurt

I wouldn't buy it. You could buy a truck just as nice but with more miles for 10k or more, so is the mileage really worth 5-7 grand to you?

Id say more around the 10-11k mark. Like said before its still a 12 year old truck.
I bought my 97 2 years ago for 10k. 2 owners 140,000 miles.

Dito, if you over pay, you'll remember it every time you put your key in the lock. Ask to have last right of refusal if he won't come down.

i paid 8500 for my 97 reg. cab long bed 4x4 auto stock, with 104k with a bunch of easy fixes, like throttle out of adjustment, idle low, buncha fuses missing,no coolant overflow, no fan shroud, no working radio, interior lights, or power mirrors, plus the drivers side mirror had no lock point so it would fold in on the highway, and but i got a fisher v-plow with my truck, and it had newer bfg at's 285's on it, and cab lights with a clean body so i took, it. and now having only put 9k on it the tranny is starting to slip pretty good.

Thanks to all for the replies. I know he paid about $11k for the truck....and then added all those extras. I don't have any pics yet. Not sure what to do. I know its a lot of money for a 96 truck, but dang....a low mileage....mint 12 valve. He has been offered $17k for it...but he did not want to sell it at that time. I think there are a few mint 12 valves out there...but people are beginning to catch on to the value of these trucks. Well...we'll see. thanks again. redwake.

I wouldn't give over about $13 for it. Sounds like a great truck, but on the market mods don't really increase the value much, and I don't believe in paying more for stuff than I could sell it for if I had to...

The way I look at it is... if you want the truck bad enough and it is in showroom condtion go for it.
I like a truck with low mileage and showroom condition. I don;t see a whole lot of trucks up were I live with a 150,ooo in them in showroon condtion, they either are rusting under the doors the under carage of the truck looks all scally or just plan rough!! that just scares me away no matter what kind of truck it is. so you pay more money for a GEM and a truck the pobly has been maintnenced correctly and never towed a thing behind it. Thats peice of mind in my book

just my 2 cents

I paid 12K for my 100 K mile truck. She isn't showroom new and she is stock.

Lets get real here, 12V prices are heading up, not down. 5 Speeds are harder to find, especially with under 200K.

I would hang him to 15K if at all possible, but to be honest, if I were presented that truck before I bought mine, I would have taken it over mine.
