Truck Buying Tips

Going to look at a 97 LWB CTD, club cab. Automatic tranny, and the truck only has 40k on it. The guy is asking 13k for it, and i was just wondering what to look for. I pretty much know i wanna buy it, but i don't wanna be taken for a fool.

thanks,

Kelly

Man oh man where are you guys finding these low mileage trucks at???? I have been on the hunt for another one for about 6 months and have been high and dry. I found the one I am driving now and was glad to get it with 60k miles. As far as the price of the one you found I would jump on it if it checks out. Look the front of the motor over for a major oil leak as in the dowel pin damage. Just give it a good over look and drive it for a good distance to get her good and hot and crawl underneath and check it out. If he has maintanace records that would be a plus. Let us know if you get it. And if so get the dowel pin secured if the owner has not done so, might ask him about that also. Goodluck,,Rick

This question is answered several times a week here, just scroll back for the posts, or do a search. My contribution is always to avoid trucks that have been caught in a Texas flood. Ya, I know there's no floods in Lubbock, but the trucks get traded around the state to unsuspecting buyers.

1997 with an unbelievable 40k miles? Driven by Granny on Sundays? Check it out.

Take a peek at the coolant right off the bat, make sure its a nice green.

Take it for a drive, long enough for it to warm up.

Note how the braking feels, note irregular tire wear. Note any weird smells. Note how it shifts.. Test out every interior item in your reach (a/c, heat, stereo, lights, etc).

Check the oil and tranny fluid.

Check quad cab door functions, tailgate, etc.

Pretty much just touch everything on the truck and make sure it works!

I bought my 99 ctd 4x4 quad cab for 12,5... but with 200k+ miles.. had a few things wrong but nothing that scared me off (needed brakes, tires, and the door latches needed adjusted).
