Towing Mirrors 3rd Gen on a 2nd Gen

So, I see that trying to have factory tow mirrors with Power and Heat for the 2nd Gen trucks is not a go. I have a question... Has anyone toyed with the mirrors on a 3rd Gen truck. From the looks of it, you could take the mount and arm from a 2nd gen mirror, pull the pivot pin and attach the mirror and motor assy (mirror head) from a 3rd gen on the 2nd gen arm. The wires would be fairly simple... copper to copper, power to power and such... Just wanted to know if this has been done or tried?
Thanks
Brett

I did mine, it took about 2 hours to do both sides. I had a new drivers side mirror given to me from the dealer up the street, It work like a dream. I bought a right side mirror from them, that did not work so well. Chrysler made a update on the mirrors, the new style ones look just like a old sytle one until you take it apart. They changed them just enough so they won't work. I bought a used one on ebay and my problem was solved. Be careful what you buy. Near as I can tell mirrors up to 2005 will work.

hey guys...im new here but i was also really interested in this topic. i love the look of the new tow mirrors. Reading above, so will the 2005 mirrors actually work or does it have to be before '05? Are the mirros hard to switch from base to base? or is it like a bolt that you have to take out, because i want the mirrors, but i REALLLY want to keep my power and such. Thanks alot guys!

For the bases and arms to line up correctly yes you need the pre 05 power mirrors. If not you will have a 1" gap on the underside and upperside of the mirror with would look horrible. I did the conversion on my truck and love it. I also got another set of pre 05 power/heated tow mirrors if interested.

I wouldn't say they look horrible, I did this and the gap is not that noticable. There is however more work to make the conversion for the newer powered flip mirrors.

I guess you are right, they look just like dodge made them. I am just used to better fit and finish than what dodge gives us. I sure do wish they would put a cummins diesel in a gm truck, I would be the first one in line for one.

They don't fit exactly but there are close enough to look ok. The front is more rounded then the base, compared to the original, but again, I wouldn't say they look bad.
