Sidewall problem...
Sidewall problem...
Looking over the truck yesterday I found a puncture that is running up the sidewall of the tire.. The tire still holds pressure, but I to me (untrained tire person) I think it will have to be replaced..

It is a LT265/75 16 Michelin LTX A/S with only 10,000 miles, Would you...

1) Use the spare to replace the damaged tire and then find a good/decent used tire (assuming safe to use in an emergency) to mount as a spare?

OR

2) Just buy a new tire to replace the damaged tire..

Im leaning toward using the spare.. I hate to drop $160 - 190 for a new tire and have a 100% spare slung under the truck that may dry rot before I wear it out..

Any thoughts?? thanks..
Re:Sidewall problem...
I had a similar deal with a tire on my old Ram 1500. My plan was to have the spare mounted on the 'pretty' rim and put the cut one on the spare rim. Dude at the tire joint was honest and told me not the worry about it. I was a little leary of it, but didn;t really feel like spending the money anyhow so I went on my merry way. Ended up putting another 30k on that tire before I sold the truck.
So my advice is to find a competent mechanic you trust and ask him if any action is really necessary. I guess it depends on how deep the cut is. Best of luck.
-Dave

I'd do the following:

First get an expert to check the tire. A blowout @ 75 mph is bad news.
If the guy says that the tire is OK, mount it on the spare rim, make a sticker saying max-speed 50mph, and use the original spare as a normal tire.

You may call me paranoid, but still they are out there to get me ;D

AlpineRAM
Re:Sidewall problem...
255/85R16's are about 33x10. 315/75R16's are about 35x12.5. The stock 265/75's are about 31.5x10.5. Tire sizes always vary by manufacturer, but these are what the tire should "actually" measure.
