Problems Starting Sometimes

First off, I would like to put this out: I don't know much about automobiles. With that being said, here is my problem.

A few days ago while I was trying to leave for work my truck would not start. When I tried to start it, nothing happened except I heard a clicking sound and it only happens once when I try to start it. Also, the ABS light turned on for a few seconds and then it turned off. After a few minutes of waiting and trying I got it to start.

Ever since then I sometimes have this problem when I try to stark my truck. Sometimes it takes a long time to get it to run and sometimes it will work on the first try. I had a problem with my truck before where the ABS light stayed on and I am afraid that I screw my truck up.

What's my problem? It has been cold lately and even though my "wait to start" light goes off, could there be a chance my engine isn't ready to start yet? Is something wrong with my starter? Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Starter contacts likely.

http://www.fostertruck.com for oversized contacts, or a new Denso starter with the good contacts already installed. I personally couldn't wait and got a new NAPA starter.

Whatever you do, make sure you don't cheap out, these things take a good starter to roll them over.

Do a "search" on this site for "hard start problem". This is a well known problem with lots of history. Lots of reading for you.

Probably starter contacts as patdaly suggested. You can replace the contacts yourself with heavy duty ones or remove the unit from the truck and take it to a electric motor repair shop like I did and let them replace the parts. The shop did it for $31.00 and all I had to do was remove and reinstall the starter. I almost fell for the new starter as that was what the NAPA guy said I should do but that was a $400.00 part and I am glad I did not choose that option. Anyway, in the world of automobile mechanics, it's not a difficult repair for a semi-skilled do-it-yourself-er. Just don't forget to disconnect both batteries before you begin.

WHOA!

I just paid 215 bucks for a NAPA New Lifetime starter...... You should watch that store carefully in the future.

About the same price from AutoZone. I'm on my 3rd one. The first 2 died out in the middle of nowhere in freezing weather. This one went out in the shop.

That's what I thought too. Quote was for a new Bosch I think. 'Ol Jimmy (Jimmy needs to retire ) at my local NAPA has misquoted prices to me in the past but to the store's credit, the other counterparts guy whispered in my ear the name of the shop to take my old starter for repair so all was good.

That's why I went with NAPA. I have NEVER, EVER had any luck at all with AZ electrical products.

I think it was Infidel who said he had not had good luck with NAPA Starters either, but so far at least mine is good.
