Need help with changing ball joints

I am in the process of changing the upper and lower ball joints on my 1996 diesel 2500 2 wheel drive. The truck is jacked up on the frame in my garage. I have a jack under the lower arm and have removed the nuts from the upper/lower ball joints. I can't seem to break the "spindle" "axle" or what ever the correct term is. loose from the joints. Does it just take some heavy hammering to break them loose? When I jack up the lower arm it raises the upper arm also so there is no pressure on the spindle. Once that is off I have the tools to press out and replace the ball joints.
Any clue on how to get the "spindle" off the bolts?

Thanks...Ron

I don't deal with 2 wheel drives, but four wheel drives, you tak ethe nut's off and screw the upper ball joint nut back on half way, then take a BIG hammer and beat the living you know what out of it, it will pop with a little "persuasion" . Then use your ball joint press tool to install them. Remember, when installing look at which one goes first, the stud part of the tool needs to go "through" the upper or lower ball joint hole. Just depends if the ball joint presses in from the top or the bottom.
