Help... Overvoltage / Voltmeter pinning

Guys-

So yesterday I was driving my truck to town (10min) to run some errands. After my first stop when I got to back to my truck I had trouble starting it... I had to turn the key and hold it down for a second or two and then it fired up, instead of it making contact right off the get go like normal. One it starts to crank it turns over fine.

Didn't think anything of it drove home no issues, started it up the next day no issues but then when I was driving in to town again the battery voltmeter pinned and the check gauges bell came on. It stayed pinned for about 30sec and then it went to normal. Over the course of a 10min drive it did this twice. When I stopped it did the slow start thing again? The starter was replaced a yr ago. Any thoughts? Suggestions? Alternator issues?

Thanks,
Ry

You could have 2 problems. New starters can be bad especially if you bought it from the chain stores. Alternators can go bad also. Begin by measuring voltage across the terminals running & with engine off. Full charge is 12.7 volts. Near 14 (mine is 13.7) is correct out put when running. Grid heaters can pull it down.

For the starter, disconnect or at least measure key to start voltage at the trip wire on the solenoid. If that is correct and starter is slow, search replacing solenoid contacts but bench test and examine your contacts first. Mine were obviously bad - just by looking at them.
