Fuel Economy
lmparts-
Try cleaning your IAT sensor with carb cleaner, or or replace it (~$15).
I've got an Ebrake, and when I see the mileage drop, I yank out the IAT and clean it- usually good for 2-3 MPG's
One time the cleaning operation didn't work, so I replaced the IAT- that time was good for 3-4 MPG's.

I am having a little trouble finding a 3-4 reducer to straight pipe it but have everything else. Maybe I will be able to find one tomorrow, if any one has any part numbers for them please let me know. Thanks

My '02 lacks the axle disconnect, but I can still clear 20 in the interstate. Best ever was 24 with the cruise set at 53mph in 6th gear on slick roads.
Front to rear has Redline in it, except the engine is M1 (delvac/T&SUV). This is w/ DD2 and EZ.
Last tank was 17mpg, all around town, all cold starts, stop and go (drive to work is 10 min).
I'm happy.
Once I cleared 30K miles, the engine seems a lot happier-- less clatter, better mpg, etc...

Is there anything out there that I can put in my truck to give me a constant reading of my MPG. Something like what you guys in the new dodges have?
Something that is real accurate measuring how much fuel is going through the lines compared to how far I am driving. Thanks.

The only aftermarket diesel use rate gauge I know of only reads in gallons per hour and costs over $1000.

Ok Here is the latest, I changed all fluids, filters and such today. I also added a BHAF, removed the silencer ring, straight piped the cat, and adjusted the trans bands. We'll see how this helps the MPG problem, it anyone else has any suggestions let me know as I am still open to opportunities. Thanks to everyone for all your help. I'll let you know what changes I see in the truck.

How did you go about straight piping the cat? Could you just cut it out, open it up with a cuttin torch, then run a peice of pipe from end to end inside, then weld it back shut? I was going to remove it, but I have heard of a few people around here getting in trouble for not having cats on their trucks. Any suggestions?
Also jtb51b did you switch over to synthetics? And which BHAF did you put in? Sorry for all the questions, but Im Dutch, and we love it when we save money

I just replaced the cat with a piece of 4" pipe myself, I don't really know about making it look like it was there. I used Delo 15-40 in the engine (not synthetic) Mopar trans fluid atf+3 (not synthetic) and Mopar rear end lube (synthetic) I also put in a bottle of friction modifier in the rear end as the dealer suggested.. I used a Baldwin BHAF. Seems to be working well so far. Let me know if I missed anything.

I too am blessed with poor fuel economy! Its about as nice as long walk off short cliff . I have changed all fluids, most filters, put a K&N, checked tire pressure, straight piped it, chipped it and turnbuckled the turbo. Darn near left the carrot dangling in front of its nose!
I still get 9.5 to 10 whether i am towing 9,000lbs around town or empty down the highway with featherfoot driving. I have seen a few other people with really bad mileage, but they all seem to have come to the conclusion that this was okay. If anyone can come up with a magical cure to aid some sickly Cummins, I'm sure we would all apreciate it. Or any other suggestions would be great too.

Do it like Forest said and as long as the shell is there, nobody gets in trouble for tampering with emmissions, "It must have failed, thanks for testing it and I'll get it fixed"
if you have to pass emmissions. I think there are federal laws about tampering with emmissions control devices, especially if you are certified.

What does the CAT do? It's not like it's a gaser with NOX and such. I thought with the newer electronic/intelligent injection, these recent CTD's ran clean, with only a minor muffler, which does not sound much different than straight pipes.
What I have found out with my truck is that the spring in the AFC housing has a lot to do with mpg. After I put my plate in and the AFC spring kit (the lightest spring) it was a lot quicker off the line but my mpg droped to 16 mpg. So I took the lighter spring out and put in the heavier spring in and know I get 19-20 highway. But now it's not as quick of the line.
