ECM Flash?

Just picked up a 2001 dually with 65K on the clock from the original owner. The guy that I got it from was showing me the tag where the dealer flashed the ECM. He said it was because the 2001’s when they were in cruise control they weren’t emissions compliant. He said it cost him 2 miles a gallon. Is there anyway someone can flash that back to stock, or is that even legal to do, or worth doing?

I am not sure if there is a way or not, perhaps with a tuner like a Smarty?

I wanted to tell you something else about the reflash you should know in case you dont.

I had my 99 re-flashed because of a hard-to-start condition that had a TSB issued by dodge to re-flash the computer. It worked, my truck is easy to start now, BUT, after this re-flash my lift pump no longer runs for a few seconds with the key on

Also, the method for priming the fuel system after changing the fuel filter doesn't work either. If I bump my starter the fuel pump does not run for 20 seconds or so like it used to.

I think this is important because how else will you fill the filter canister with fuel after a filter change?

Or worse yet, what if you are 100 miles from anywhere and your "water-in-fuel" light comes on? You have no method to purge the system!

What I did to combat this was; I took a wiring pigtail I had lying around from an old liftpump (before I made the upgrade) and made it into a wiring harness with alligator clamps to jump right to the battery. I put a switch on mine too but dont have too.

I packed it up in a big zip-lock bag and it stays in the truck all the time.

I see it's your first post, welcome to DTR!! You will find this website to be loaded with any info you need for your truck! I have even found Cummins part numbers on here that the Cummins dealer near me couldn't find!

my friend had the same issue, first re flash killed his MPG. we found that there is a cold weather flash for 3 cylinder idle mode. He is now happy with good 20+mpg's again, but wow the 3 cylinder mode is a freakin trip, sounds like my Kubota B7510. In this video it hits at 1:38

One of the flashes also contains programming that turns your oil pressure gauge into basically a idiot light.
Gauge will only read zero and normal, sometimes people don't ever notice it.

Perfectly legal to relash to stock. Just qestion your dealer and make sure they will honor anything they do that goes wrong. Mine wouldn't but didn't tell me until they fried my ecm.
